Income support help

hi, first time posting however I have a predicament! In September I started at university and was awarded my student loan and received my first instalment. In November I had to give up university as my disabled daughter needed extra care and I could not juggle both, I have applied for income support as I spoke to the student loan company and they said I will have to immediately repay the loan for the days of the term that I have not attended. I have advised income support of this and they are refusing my claim as they are attributing the whole loan up to the 9th of January wether or not I have to pay it back??? They have said they will expect me to use the loan money to live on basically telling me they will assume I spent it even if I don't?? I am so confused and worried about spending money that is not legally mine!! Without income support I don't get help for my rent either?!?!? Help😩

So you expect the government to pay you twice?
The loan i assume was a sizable amount for them to work out till 9th of january...
You only pay back the loan when you get a job and earn over a certain amount....Annual income (before tax) Monthly income Monthly repayment
Up to £17,495 £1,457 None
£18,500 £1,541 £7
£21,000 £1,750 £26
£24,000 £2,000 £48
The money is yours they have given you it, Nothing is legally going to happen if you spend it. Plus a lot of students use to do this, Student loans company use to pay the full amount in one go and people just went got the £6000 loan or so then dropped out.0 -
it is possible that the SLC is asking for repayment now. OP, you need to check the terms and conditions of the loan.

Is it the student loan for SLC that you are referring to?
if they are demanding the money back then you should show Income Support a letter from SLC saying this and proof that you have repaid it.
HB and CT support is available to those on low incomes as well as those on income based benefits so you may be eligible for these.
Find out exactly what you are being asked to repay, gather the paperwork and contact IS again.0 -

If you haven't yet repaid your loan then you're likely to be ineligible for IS until you do. When you have, do as suggested and submit proof that you no longer have the money and then you should be able to recaim IS.0 -
The loan is treated as an income even though it's a loan.0
