More than contents wrong value cover

Hi guys,

So I've been recently going through a claim for my dropped laptop, an old macbook pro. The claims company have said it is beyond economical repair and want to settle the claim. More than state it is only covered up to 1035 pound. However I phoned them up 4 months ago requesting new paperwork for my mortgage application and specified that the value of the laptop was 1500 as well as the value of some other items. I'm getting passed from pillar to post between the sales and claims team and not getting anywhere. I'm annoyed. It's obviously nonsense, I wouldn't bother ringing up the company to ensure the cover of my laptop was 35 pounds higher than the standard cover!

Anyone have any ideas and suggestions?

Is that the policy limit or the true value of replacement?
and specified that the value of the laptop was 1500

And if you were to search on say amazon, would that be the value it is appearing now?

  • The 1035 figure they have given me is the what the say is the value i insured it for. The laptop is now discontinued. It was purchased for around 1500. The similar size screen base model macbook pro is now over 2000! Apple have hiked up their laptop prices quite significantly it seems.

The problem with electronic goods is that they go down in price over time for a like for like replacement as new technology makes older technology cheaper. So, replacement should be similar spec to what you had. You rarely get the full price unless it is under a year old or technology hasnt moved on in that period.

  • The issue is the assessing company have identified a replacement model at a much higher value than 1035. I have no idea where the 1035 value came from that my insurance company has said is my limit. I phoned them specifically stating the value of my laptop and some of my instruments - the issue is they haven't noted this down.
  • Do you have proof of instructing them of the new value? Even so, if that doesn't mean that's what you'll get if they deem the price to replace it like for like to be less. What cover does your documents say?
  • They have told them I informed them that it was worth 1035 - which is not true. I stated 1500. I don't have proof, I was never sent any new documentation with this on. I believe they've either heard me wrong or logged it wrong. I'm more than happy to accept not getting the value for how much the brand new ones retail for now, I am noted that they value they have insured it for is different to the one I told them it was valued it .

You can obtain a transcript of your call or a recording and / or any other information they hold on you.

It costs you £10 and is called a SAR (Subject Access Request)

If they have a note to say the item is specified for X amount, when is that note from? Is it 4-months ago when you called them? I would suggest asking for the relevant call recordings as the onus is on you to prove it wasn't £1035 ...

They record all calls and you can complain and ask them to pull the call and listen to it. My mum's done that with her insurer before and they did so without having to pay to do an SAR...
  • Thank you for all the suggestions guys, I have taken them on board. I will keep you posted.
