VED/sorn over xmas- new year

I have 2 vehicles (on the road) that the VED is paid monthly , I would like to cancel the monthly plan and pay them in one

we have got a few days break coming up and I,m fortunate that I will not need them from say dec 27th untill jan 3rd , both vehicles are insured and garaged.

can I

declare the 2 vehicles sorn (online) on say the 28/29th dec , and then walk to my local post office with V5s on say tue 3rd/wed 4th and pay the VED in one lump

does the DVLA (computer system) shut down for xmas/new year ?

I would check your insurance as some do not cover SORNed cars

there is nothing in my policies regarding VED or sorn , I am just trying to establish if this method might work and be easier than ringing the DVLA and causing confusion ,

Not money saving but for the sake of a couple of £ i would let them run and tax then for the year next time.

Whats the saving £20 or less?

Daughter needed some direct debits for her bank account to pay its bonus. So pay an extra £8 a year ( i think) and she earn(ed) £5 a month now £3. Still in profit.

VED is paid and refunded by complete calendar months.

So if you SORN in December, you get a refund of January onwards. If you tax in January, you pay January onwards. If you're thinking of SORNing from even the start of Dec, then retaxing before the end of Jan, you will save... £0. Not one penny. You will be paying the VED for Dec and for Jan.

You may even end up paying more, because you won't get the 5% or 10% premium refunded, if you paid by any other means than 12mo in one shot.

the ved is currently paid by installments , on I think the 1st or second of every month ,and december has already been paid for . if I was to sorn them on the 28/29th I would loose only 2-3 days of ved before starting a 12mth one off payment on the first working day of january.

No, you wouldn't lose "2-3 days of VED" - because VED is monthly.

Anyway, if all you want to do is move from DD back to one-lump payments, then it'd certainly be nice if DVLA had thought of that and put something on their website...

Ask your bank or building society to cancel your Direct Debit. Depending on your account, you can do this online, by phone or post, or at a branch.
You can keep driving your vehicle until the date your next Direct Debit payment was due.
Tax your vehicle on the date the next Direct Debit payment was due. Use the 11 digit number on your vehicle log book (V5C).
Pay the tax for your vehicle using either a Direct Debit from a different account, or a different payment method, for example, by debit or credit card.

ok , cancell DD and just pay for 12 mths at a post office on the 1st of the month
