When are you going, this time of year is probably best, Mediterranean weather in November and December.

The touristy things are popular for a reason so star ferry, the peak etc are good.

South side of hing Kong island is a nice trip to Stanley and around.

A bit more adventurous is going out to one of the islands, Lantau or one of the smaller ones.

Do a bit of research and state what your interests are and people may be able to tailor advice a bit more specifically.
  • We are going in April and enjoy walking and sightseeing. We are staying at the Dorset Mongkok.
Should we change money before we arrive or is there an ATM that we can use at the airport?

There's an ATM at the airport, and plenty around Hong Kong. I've been to Hong Kong a few times, and was there last December - it's become painfully expensive! You can get into Hong Kong from the airport by express train (about 25mins) or taxi. There isn't really much price difference between taxi and train if there are at least two of you, so choose based on convenience.
Depending on your airline, on your last day you may be able to check your bags in at the airport express terminal in Kowloon which is handy if you have a late flight.

If you enjoy walking have a look at this: http://www.discoverhongkong.com/uk/see-do/great-outdoors/hikes/dragons-back-hiking-tour.jsp We were going to do it last year but the weather wasn't great.

I'd recommend Tian Tan Buddha on Lantau Island. From memory you'd need to get the tube to the end of one of the lines and then a cable car.

There are also buses that follow the same route into town: they are cheaper than the train, and the view is even better since the road bridges across the sea are directly above the rail ones.

If you can fit in a ferry to Macau, it's an interesting change of scenery that doesn't require a visa (IIRC).

I spent 2 days there in 2014 and felt like I only scratched the surface. It can be an expensive place but I would love to go back.

If stopping on the island I'd go up the Peak as early as possible on your first morning before it gets too busy. It's great way of getting your bearings.

Otherwise one of the joys of HK like any other big city is just wandering around without much of a plan and seeing what you stumble across.

The Hong Kong tourist authority is excellent: they have an information point in the airport, just before you pass the final security check. Make a point of visiting them; pick up lots of brochures; ask questions...

Don't forget that Hong Kong is very much more than the city: it has some of the best national parks and accessible wilderness areas in the region.

I just watched this the other day. Never been to Hong Kong but it did whet my appetite.
