No, I don't use rear fogs in heavy rain, why would I do that? Although is that any worse than the tw@ts who drive in thick fog on motorways with no lights at all? I doubt it.

Front fogs serve a purpose in areas where there are no street lights, they turn ours off here between 1am and 5am, it's pitch black, I'd rather take my chances using front fogs than full beam blinding a car coming the opposite way.

Try driving behind someone on the motorway for a while with their rear fogs on in the rain. Front fogs are for use in ummm fog. They are not supplementary lighting. You will also likely be illuminating your rear fog light at the same time unless you have separate switches - thus giving the person behind you glare and also making him wonder whether or not you are braking. To use them otherwise is illegal. Many cars now have intelligent lighting that automatically returns full beam to dip. Otherwise you just h ave to use observation. Surely you can cope with that?

Wherever there are combined front-rear fog light switches - a horrible penny-pinching ergonomic mess on a par with trying to fit everything onto a single stalk - the front fogs go on before the rears.

Reminds me of the time my son came in one night with a piece of paper off the police, been speeding said i,no dad got stopped by the police for driving with front fog light on.
He had been driving along the coast ( we live in the NE of England ) and thick fog was blowing in from the sea when the police stopped him, said it was not foggy ( it was patchy/intermittant )the car was a Renault 5 with tiny front yellow fog lights,i said i will write to the polce and clear this up as it was foggy outside our house even, but no you either paid the fine,£20.00 or went to court to plead not guilty, pay the money i told him, will cost you more to fight it and there were no licence points involved. He said it was not fair as it was foggy at the time but i told him to put it down to experiance and get on with his life.:rotfl:

It's a personal choice, but I wouldn't buy a 3 door car. Apart from the undignified scrabble to get in and out of the back seat, the bigger doors mean that the front seat belts are set too far back, and you need a bigger parking space/garage the accommodate the wider opening swing of the doors.

Plus, hopefully this will never happen to any of us, but when I see news reports of a multiple vehicle pile-up I go cold at the idea of people being trapped in the back of 3 door cars.

Really? That would be quite unusual. Mine are all on one switch what car is yours? It still safer and less dazzling to others to use your main beam rather than fog lights. I hope a jobsworth policeman stops you for it, because the use of fog lights does affect other drivers. People usually turn off their full beam when other cars are around. You no doubt keep yours on regardless which means there is extra glare in the mirrors of the car in front of you.

Consider others and use better observation.
  • Thanks all for your input. Didn't go for either in the end. Common sense kicked in and I'm now looking at something older/cheaper for first run about.
I muat admit I am a bit put off about buying an older car as I'm scared it'll cost a fortune to fix further down the line but suppose that can happen with any car.
  • It's peeing me off the amount of cars driving behind me with fog lights on and what appears to be main beam almost blinding me if I look in the mirror. From what I've experienced happening to me this is a major problem. I think these people must be thick to think that this is acceptable behaviour.
