Concerns with road vibrations to my house

Hi all,

I have a slight concern, I didn't really know who to ask about it - kind of two questions in one.

I live on a road with speed humps - one is directly outside my house. It's not a main road, but there are buses that use it, and a few lorries to the local shops. SOmetimes if something heavy goes over it very fast, the whole house shudders - what reminded me was that a bauble just fell off my xmas tree!
Does this kind of thing affect the structure of a house over time?

There's not really any outward evidence of any issues, except the second part of the question -

About 4 years ago, I had a loft extension - which included a dormer to the side, extending the roofline across. All properly and checked with building regs - steels installed and building engineers involved.
Now, that extension inside is showing lots of cracks and lose panels - is that normal? I know there will be some settlement, and the overall structure looks ok to my amateur eyes, but I'm slightly concerned.

If you contact your local councillor, and build up a rapport, you might be able to get the speed bumps removed. One approach would be to say an increase in noise pollution and an increase in exhaust emissions.

Nobody can give firm advice on your roofspace without seeing it, or photos. As a rule of thumb remember Buildings Regulations have nothing to do with workmanship quality. So you may have inadequate plasterboard, or inadequate fixings to the boards, or inadequate scrim between boards - to give some examples. All of these would be issues that are your responsibility to monitor and control during the building process. Equally roofspaces are timber and timber does move - so some cracking will occur particularly during the early months/years of the work being done.
