Having read all the info I can, I chose to install TotalAV Free on my new laptop. Is there a way to stop the pop-up's encouraging me to buy a £40 yearly subscription? It has happened every couple of hours over the last 3 days, I never had this with Avast and if I can't stop the pop-up's I'm tempted to uninstall TotalAV and install the free Avast, or is paying a subscription the way to go these days?

Either use Security essentials and a bit of common sense, or if you dont trust yourself then many people seem happy with bit defenders free offering ..
There is really no need to pay for an AV IMHO ..

All the free ones appear to be getting worse regarding popups and little reminders that you can get essentially the same product for some money.
I want my AV to be light and sleek and just do the one job. Seek out and find nasty files.
I want my firewall to do the same, i dont want them to wash the dishes and run the vacuum around.
All getting bloated with increasing adverts.
It must be working, tempted now to purchase something. But it wont be any of the big ones with nagware creeping in. It will be something small and light that just works.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
I dumped Avast! precisely because of its popups. Avira was as bad, AVG a little less annoying. I'm now using Panda free which is very unobtrusive.
I think a little annoyance is inevitable when you choose to use a free AV. What I really object to are the booby-trapped prompts some use that try to fool you into selecting a paid upgrade when you think you doing some routine update.0
