asbestos in rented flat boiler - what would you do

Hello - I have rented a room for a few weeks in a flat in the city. The day I moved in, I realised the room next to mine, was a boiler room, had an asbestos sticker on it. I know of the dangers, but i've also heard it's okay untouched. what would you do ? it's still early days so i could move out and forfeit the rent

Looks like an asbestos cement water tank, very low risk. Probably a header tank.

Don't cut it, drill it or smash it up into little pieces and you'll be absolutely fine. No risk of it getting into the water either before you start worrying about that.

As long as it's not crumbling or otherwise creating dust then it's fine, leave it along.
Make sure other people in your house understand to leave it alone too.

As the sticker says, the asbestos is encapsulated so won't do you any harm providing you leave the encapsulation alone. This is common in a lot of buildings as building owners have a duty to manage asbestos where present.

If at any point the encapsulation becomes damaged then you need to inform the owner, other than that keep calm and carry on.

    okay thankyou

just to ask anyone who may know - is asbestos likely to be only on the top part ?

the bottom, cylindrical boiler/water storage, has fibres exposed. but no asbestos sticker. do you think this may also have asbestos ?
  • The hot water tank jacket? Thats likely to be glass fibres or mineral wool. Its likely the property has had an asbestos survey which is why the tank is marked.
