Faulty goods

There has been a lot of talk recently about faulty goods, including Martin Lewis on TV a couple of days ago. I bought a coffee machine from Argos in August 2015, it broken down today and I took it back to Argos. Despite its having packed up sixteen months into a three year warranty, the customer service person and her manager insisted that I would have to contact the manufacturer as Argos will only honour a guarantee up to one year from purchase. Is this correct, or are Argos simply being obstructive ?

Who offered the three year warranty? If it is the manufacturer, then Argos guy is right.0

Well, a warranty is something which is provided by the manufacturer. This means that you would need to approach the manufacturer regarding any warranties. Shame that Argos didn't do that on your behalf, but they don't have any say in enforcing/acting upon the manufacturer warranty!
Of course, there may exist some kind of "guarantee" with Argos which is in addition to your manufacturer warranty. You'd have to refer to your original contract for information on that. The twelve months they qouted is a fairly standard length for a "guarantee" made by a retailer.
The third option is that you can discuss your rights under the Sales of Goods Act with Argos, as the retailer would be directly responsible for remedying any inherent faults with the item. The only snag with this is that legally you would need to obtain an independent fault report to show that the fault was inherent at the time of purchase (but Argos may give you some goodwill and not insist on this), as 6 months have passed.0
