are there any websites like this and, if not, where would you recommend looking if in need of accommodation? even if it's shared house, it doesn't matter. a lot of tenants go to estate agent websites, but these sites tend to ask for upfront fees.

Spare room has some advertisements where there is no fee other than the rent. These are usually but not always for a room in a shared house...0

Okay, does that require you to have the money up front? Or would they wait until payday? I am guessing the former, but not sure.0 -

Dear, dear me. Sigh................I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.0

You want a private landlord not an agency but no the odds of them letting you've in without paying the rent upfront is nil. Some may be a bit flexible and wait til payday for the deposit but it's unusual (but not impossible I managed to negotiate this for my son's new flat this month however I did already know the landlord although not well)
However without a job where would your rent come from? Did you speak to the council?I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Even without agents fees you would still have to pay the rent up front and a month's (or more) deposit.
Try OpenRent as they take adverts from individual landlords (and upload them to Rightmove etc).
Sometimes local councils can help with deposit loan schemes if you don't have the deposit but could otherwise sustain a tenancy.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0
