Ford Powershift saga

Our 2013 Fiesta developed the Powershift judder a few thousand miles from new and the clutch packs were eventually changed in May 2015 under warranty. Come September 2016 and 5000 miles later the judder was back. As it happens Ford had extended the warranty on auto gearboxes to 5 years so in we went again. We have no complaints about the dealer. The job was done, the new (3rd ) clutch packs were in and the new Powershift was working perfectly as Ford intended. BUT for how long. Anectdotal evidence from the dealer says new Fiestas from 2015 onwards have not exhibited the problem. Who knows. Ford as usual are keeping quiet. Maybe other types of Powershift fitted to Focus, C-Max are OK. Again who knows. All we know is that our Fiesta has gone and been replaced by a BMW 118i with a conventional auto. Sorry Ford. It was a good car, but if we want an auto it can't be a Ford.

How times change their old slushbox auto's used to be quite reliable if they got an oil change every now and then and if it did fail you could recondition it for 50p.

Yep, many auto gearboxes (even on small cars, look at the Clio!) on new cars are DSG type these days and crammed with electronics ready to fail.

And when they do, it might be cheaper to scrap the car. Great.
