This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” is fine

Morning all,

    Good morning.
Thanks for starting us off RR.

Plan A for today (leave Glasgow by 10.00am) went out the window late last night when my Mum decided to rearrange the aborted trip to Dobbies for this morning. So, plan B is to be at the garden centre by 10.00am instead. Mum lives in a beautiful tenement flat right opposite the Botanic Gardens and has no garden of her own so why we are going to Dobbies baffles me. Hey ho...if it keeps her happy then I'm happy. The only place I refuse, point blank, to take her is the big yellow shed which is just hell.

After lunch is my new ETD.

It seems colder than yesterday already. I'm clinging to the comfort of the winter solstice in ten days time.

    Happy Sunday everyone.
  • Morning folks and thanks REDRUBY. Another mild one and we have been avoiding the rain that's been battering other parts of the country.

I got all the festive stuff up yesterday and then we had a run over to the oh too tempting Christmas Shop at the garden centre over the hill. The light up church I had been dithering over had all sold out! I had dithered too long! So settled on an illuminated scene with a little church, a train going round under a tunnel, some moving figures and a waterfall! It's a bit busy and not as tranquil as the church would have been!!

This afternoon we are off to our local heritage museum in the ex mill owners mansion. Eldest DGD is singing with the school glee choir in the central hall. I don't know where these DGC get their performing side from, it's certainly not us!! I'm hoping it will be Christmas carols as it might make me feel a bit more festive.

I'm not bothering with a roast dinner today. I made enough chicken curry to cover tonight as well so I am just doing some small gammon steaks at lunchtime to have with salad and new potatoes.

REDRUBY my DD started her job on work experience from Tech college and she is still there 26 years later!!! Never worked anywhere else with just 3 maternity breaks!

Have a good day and (((HUGS))) to all in need. As always thinking of LAINEY< COXY, LWW and HILSTEP. AOD hope you soon start to feel better, it's dragged on a long time and you sound so fed up. Take care all xx

    Morning All

Have a good day at work RR, that's a good long holiday you're having. Hope DD enjoys hers too.
I don't envy you Gers, going anywhere near Braehead today will be hell!
Hope you are feeling much better today AOD.

It's been raining here but fairly mild. The washing is on the airer upstairs and my washing up is done - thank goodness I don't have much at the moment, I get a sore back leaning over the bath!

The dishwasher arrived yesterday, good job I was in, my delivery slot was between 1.45 and 5.35 - they turned up at 12.30! Got all my bits of shopping done, will go and collect the new TV later today when I meet DD.

Had a lovely meal out at a friends last night, really enjoyed the fresh veggies, can't wait to be able to cook again! I'll be eating at DDs today as I'm going over to get her christmas decs out of the loft.

Hope you all have a peaceful Sunday. Take care. XX

    Morning everyone

redruby - thanks for starting us off x

Hugs to those that want/need them x

Happy birthday to those with a birthday x

DH and myself up enjoying first peaceful cuppas - boys still in their pits.

Dinner last night was hot new potatoes, side salad, hot quiche, ham, etc. I remembered to get the pork joint out to defrost, so lunch will be roast pork, roasties, mash, carrots, cauli/broc cheese, peas, yorkshires and gravy, I've written a menu plan but forgot that DS2 and myself won't be home for dinner Tuesday evening as we'll be at his graduation, so need to do a re-think. DH has asked this morning what are we having for lunch as there doesn't seem to be much food in the fridge bearing in mind I did the food shop on Friday morning and it's now only Sunday morning - told him that we're spending way too much money on food, he didn't say too much too that - but it's true, we should be able to cut the food bill by quite a few quid a week, if he'd be more open to trying different things and having just one night a week without meat, but as you all know he's so b....y difficult about food at times. In fairness most of this has been caused by MIL, when he was a child they really struggled financially, she's an ok cook, but during the summer months they'd grow loads of salad stuff and that would be dinner every night - and not a nice salad like we make nowadays, it'd be lettuce, tomato and cucumber dumped on a plate - I can see where he's coming from on that one, I try not to serve the same food 2 nights in a row, with the exception of chips but that's at the menfolks' request. She also used to buy cheap meat - he won't eat mince at all, he's been put off that for life by the cheap fatty grisly mince she used to buy and then make it last for several meals. I use quorn mince to make shepherds pie, lasagne, spag bol, and although not a favourite he will eat it. I find it hard to understand, MIL would moan about having not enough money but she used to smoke and smoke quite heavily - she always had her money for her fags, but not enough to buy decent food?! Sorry that turned into a bit of a rant.....

Today will be a chill day - I'll be getting a shower shortly, then organising the lunch and pack ups, if I get chance I want to write some xmas cards, we were thinking of going to the local xmas market being held today but have now changed our minds, it's just a glorified Sunday market really. If I can be bothered I may make some soup whilst the oven is on, the pork joint is not huge and there's no bone in it, so will be cooked in an hour and 30 mins.

DS1 appeared to have a good time on his night out and away, although he went to bed at 4pm yesterday and didn't get back up - thinking he'll be starving when he does emerge!

    Keep safe and well x

Fake Christmas went off pretty well. The rib of beef was lovely and luckily I managed not to overcook it. The baked cheesecake was delicious and so easy to make, I'll definitely be making that again.

All the children were wiped out though, they all work so hard and such long hours they need the weekends to recover. DD and her DH are also struggling with their house renovation which is going pretty well apart from the rogue plumber they are using. It's supposed to be finished by the end of this week but I can't see it and much as her DH wants to go on their India trip I can't see that happening either, in which case we'll have them for real Christmas as well as fake Christmas. I'll be quite happy if that's the case.

Counting down now till DH's op tomorrow, we can't wait. I hope he feels as good as he thinks he will, he's already booked his gym sessions for next weekend. He's booked the ones he normally did before he became ill, that is 5 sessions in 3 days. I've told him to cancel some of them rather than jump straight in again, we shall see.

    Good morning,

RedRuby thank you for starting the thread.

Gers what's the big yellow shed? It sounds ominous!

Hugs and wellbeing wishes to all who need them, I keep you all in my prayers.

Right, today I gave the Breakfast Chef (DH) a well deserved break, yellow peppers omelette, toast and tea in bed. In a minute he has to get up and work a solid hour drawing the last details for the new church kitchen. He is a retired architect and you cannot keep him away from drawing something or another (even if the drawing board is now used to hang laundry on LOL), he always finds a project or the other to design as a volunteer! the drawings have to be in by today so he is a bit frantic.

In all honesty, I am a bit envious, imagine having a job that you love so much that you do it even when you retire! There is a saying "once you find a job you love, you never again have to do a day's work in your life". So true! I never found a job I truly loved. Being a doula was nice but it burnt me out. Office work just about ok but I am so anti-establishment, hated having managers and dealing with office politics.

Actually, I quite liked being a housewife and mother, but when the kids were little it was financially untenable, needed two salaries with the cost of living in London and the mortgage. At least I managed to work part time for most of the time. But no, I never had a job that felt like a lifetime vocation, like DH has.

Today plan: church in the morning, then leftover soup roulette for lunch (2 small leftovers mixed to make a bigger soup). Got to do our last load of laundry before our trip. Then pop to allotment to plant garlic, this is as late as I could leave it, got to be in the ground before it freezes. I really need to prune our little apple tree too.

Dinner is all the veg in the fridge, so it will be a mishmash roast of roots and a peppers, celery and tofu stir fry.

Tomorrow my cat sitting house guest will arrive from Spain. She is a friend of my sister, who is in between jobs, studying English and yoga. I offered my home in exchange of cat sitting and looking after the home while we are away. So a bit of tidying up is in order. My lovely cleaner agreed to come for a one-off hour tomorrow morning to do the kitchen floor and bathroom.

Last of the tea to drink, then I am off to start the day with laundry.

    Have a good Sunday.
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).
  • Morning all, not much sleep but feel a bit more cheerful.
I'm going to have a warm bath and a nap. Dinner tonight will be roast beef, plus the usual things. I don't make puddings normally, DS has a banana instead.

Yesterday I managed one clue in the Times crossword, proof positive that I am becoming dimmer by the day. I might have a second attempt today to see if any brain cells have miraculously regretted spontaneously overnight. I bet not though.

Next Saturday will be decorating day, I normally do it the Saturday before Christmas except if Christmas is at the weekend. And am looking forward to our traditional special treat on Christmas Eve, fish fingers. If I feel extra fancy, might have fish finger sandwiches, my favourite thing.

I hope everyone has a good day, or at least a tolerable one.
I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back

    Morning everyone,

Well it's lovely to see the sun today, we were lashed with the rain yesterday for most of the day. Have just been out to fill the bird feeders up and the garden is very soggy.

Another disturbed night sleep wise so feel like a wet rag, luckily I don't have many plans for today. DM texted last night to say didn't feel up to coming over to ours today, think she was worn out from going over to her bungalow but it's done now and hopefully that will put her mind at rest. We have the hospice nurse coming tomorrow, she hasn't seen DM for nearly two weeks so will be interesting to see what she thinks. Spoke to my DB and they are having a quiet day at home as well so it's a chill out day for us all.
Will make the most of the sunshine and get Tilly dog out for a long run, big girls hips can't take longer than 20 minutes so will take little un up to the heath for a good blast on her own.
Other than day it's a pottering day for me, took a portion of frozen beef casserole out last night so think will put a pastry lid on that as DOH loves a meat pie.

It's funny how our childhood affects our eating in adult life isn't it NMLC, you always cater so well for your menfolk m'dear.
RR enjoy your last day at work for a while :j
AOD hope you feel better soon, seem to have been through it a bit lately health wise so take care of yourself x

Thinking of all who are worried and have heavy hearts, peace to you all, take care folks x
  • Morning (((((((((( hugs )))))))))) if you need one.

We are still in bed, I was awake at 8 am decided to have an extra 5 minutes, woke at 9.30!! That's what happens when you do not set the alarm.

The sun is out, I have a small load of whites in the washer, so will put them out for a blow.

I turned the kitchen rad down last night when I was cooking supper, forgot to put it back on, brrrrr it was cold when I went in.

I have a gammon joint to cook, will take some off for supper tonight with mustard sauce and slice the rest tomorrow when it's cold, it will keep us going for supper and sarnies.

Think I had better get my butt into the shower and show willing......
