Hi all,

I need your help with car insurance and breakdown cover with the things I need to know what covers I need.

I am going to start with car insurance first. I am going to get full comprehensive for car insurance, but there are few things I need to know whether if I do need motor legal protection, windscreen cover, courtesy car cover.

Do I need motor legal protection?

Well my friend's dad said to me that motor legal protection is actually waste of money when it is supposed to be free. The insurance companies have their own solicitor who supposed to help you out to defense you when it is not your fault, but they have never been bothered with him when he had an accident that wasn't his fault. Should I not bother with motor legal protection?

As for breakdown cover, I want to get a breakdown that covers anywhere in the UK where ever I am, so if I get breakdown they could come and get me. If the car cannot get it to fix, they would take me home or else if they could fix the car I could carry on driving. Do you know what type of cover do I need?

Local? Onward cover? national cover?

I have never been used home start cover as I have never been breakdown at home. So should I not bother with home start cover?

The reason I am asking for these questions is because I want to save my money without I can waste it. :)

Thanks in advance

Legal Protection is not for defending you. Its actually for uninsured loss recovery.

So if you are in an incident where the other party is to blame (or partly to blame) your "legal protection" will pursue the other side to reimburse you any uninsured losses you incur (eg excess/hire car/loss of earnings/compensation for personal injury). If you are partly to blame they will pursue the other side for your "share" of your uninsured losses (eg if its 50/50 you get 50% recovery of your uninsured losses)

You need to read up on the level of breakdown offered by the insurer and decide if its what you want (and cost effective to tie it in with your insurance or buy separately)

If you buy comp cover then windscreen cover will be included
  • Do you think if i should need legal protection or not?

I am talking about buying breakdown cover seperately. So here it is again as you haven't read it properly.

it would be helpful if you understood what you have re quoted.

Local, only good within a few miles of your house.
Onward, They will take you to your destination should you break down.
National cover, you are covered nationally.

What's not to understand if you want cover anywhere in the UK?

Homestart is not just on the drive or outside the house, it could be within 1/4 mile to 5 miles of your home. If your mostly local then the breakdown wont be any help.

If it did break down at home how would you fix it or get it to a garage?

Your friends dad has not had the siituation where a claim was settled but you didnt get your excess back.
If you think legal protection is worthless dont get it. But dont cry when you find out you needed it after a claim.

AA's basic cover includes anywhere more than a quarter of a mile from home. We have it via Saga and they helped me when about 3 miles from home, with priority as I was female and alone.

Because I am a semi-professional mechanic I know where the trouble would be if I can't start the car up or I could get a friend to get check over.

I am going to get a legal protection as it don't cost me anything and don't cry if you don't have one so don't be an idiot.

Does the basic cover anywhere in the uk as you are quarter of a mile away from your home?

I would be interested to know if the basic cover does cover anywhere in the uk so I could get one to save me alot of money rather than waste it.

Thank you for clarify this. I don't need Onward travel because I am not going to Scotland or Wales for an holiday. I only need it when I need it so just for now I don't need it.

It sound like a national cover is for what I really need?

Does national cover anywhere in the uk?

If so, the cheapest I have found is £38 anywhere in the uk just for one year. I have tried on AA breakdown cover with national cover, it will cost me £99 for the year. :(

Our policy is via Saga and has its own T&Cs but the AA minimum cover does seem to be UK wide, but like Saga's will only cover towing to a garage or destination up to 10 miles from the breakdown.

I notice that the AA basic limits you to one callout, with any further being covered by the option to pay per callout or upgrade via the callout person. (Saga's doesn't mention this limit, but it's only £19).
