This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.
Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” is fine

Good Morning chums ,had a busy day yesterday Bowie had to go to the vets for a biopsy and was there for most of the day so I was around 'just in case' I was needed.
DD had the day off as if she doesn't take them before the end of the year she loses them so I was bolstering up her spirits a bit.
History in the afternoon for two hours and we learned about Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela .We do all periods and people in our history group so its very interesting.
Bowie is home and very sleepy after his small op.We should have the results by Wednesday.
Today is a pottering around day and I am up and about at silly o'clock. There is a fox locally whose barking wakes me up.Don't know if he is courting or not but I wish he was amourous somewhere else. No doubt a Nanna nap will be on the cards later today. Talking of cards I must finish the last of them off and get in the post.
I did a small shop as well yesterday as sainsbury's had 6x1lte cases of UHT milk reduced down to £3.50.Great news as last time I bought a case it was £4.25 so I bought two cases which will see me through the worst of the winter weather. I don't use a great deal of milk ,just for teas and coffee and perhaps now and again cereal and find UHT is fine for me and there is less waste.
I also nipped into Dobbies and bought a lovely fir wreath which DD and I will take to the cemetery in Hither Green London tomorrow for my late brother and Mum who are both buried together there.I thought a fir wreath would last a bit longer than flowers at this time of the year
Hope you all have a good day and don't get too frazzled with all the shops which will no doubt be heaving.I am quite glad all my presents are bought and wrapped and I don't need the crush, I am not keen on crowded places at this time of the year .far too many coughs and sneezes from careless folk.I have to stay germ-free as much as possible as I have an impaired immunity system.Plus of course I want to be fit and well for DGS wedding in two weeks time
Take care all
JackieO xx
P.S. T/A that bacon and lentil soup is delicious, I chucked a spoonful or two of lazy garlic in as well and a cubed potato and made a large SC full overnight, and have a couple of litres of it in the fridge to use up over the coming days I shall take a flask of it with me tomorrow when we go to the cemetery as they are cold windy places0 -
Morning folks and thanks JACKIE for the thread. Another sleepless one here but what's new?!
Want to pop down to Poun*land this morning and battle the hordes. I thought I had covered everything until I tried to light a candle last night and my gas gun thing is empty! Cheap enough in the £ shop and easier than messing with matches with so many candles to light over Xmas!
I am dithering over a gorgeous light up church I saw at the oh-so-tempting Christmas shop at the garden centre over the hill. Not cheap but I can just see it on my coffee table under the window! Will put the tree and other ornaments, candles etc up this afternoon.
We had a phone call yesterday about making Mr TA's pre-op assessment appointment for the ureteric stent. She offered us Monday afternoon so that will be fun battling through all the Xmas shoppers in Leeds, which is busy enough at the best of times. Not to mention a packed train full of shoppers and their bags for our return journey.
Tonight I am going to make the chicken curry which never got made last Saturday! The defrosted chicken pieces ended up in a mushroom sauce instead and it was a bit of a disappointment!
Have a good day all and (((HUGS))) to all in need of one. Esp LAINEY, LWW, COXY and HILSTEP. Take care whatever you are up to xx
Just seen your ps JACKIE, glad you enjoyed it!"If you dream alone it will remain just a dream. But if we all dream together it will become reality"0 -
Morning everyone
JackieO - thanks for starting us off x I sympathise with the being woken early, where we live is a rural area, and there's an old house nearby with lovely big old trees in it's large garden and there's owls in the trees, every so often you can hear the owls calling during the night, I have to say it doesn't bother me and a like to hear it, sometimes it'll last for ages then other times only a few calls.
Hugs to those that want/need them x
Happy birthday to those with a birthday x
Still dark, damp and mild. Roads here are filthy, all the cars are black.
DH up and gone into work as his boss asked, I'm working this morning also.
Dinner last night was jacket potato, beans, cheese, sausages, mushrooms and fried egg. Tonight it'll be a big salad with hot new potatoes.
Was reasonably productive yesterday - I managed to get the food shopping done, and also went to MrM's and used the last of my vouchers and then my £5 off vouchers, I got most of the xmas drink, so bill was quite hefty and I needed to spend £55 or more, which I did easily, but actually only paid £37 ish, I just need a bottle of whisky and a bottle of brandy, the whisky was on offer so was sold out. I'll then get the mixers, orange juice etc this next week, I do need to get some other bits too, nuts, crisps, biscuits but Lidl's have nice bits so will get it in there. I did get some fruit cup cakes made yesterday also.
I'm opening at work this morning, and had a text from SIL yesterday afternoon to remind me it's her partners birthday on Sunday, so I'll get him a card this morning from MrT as I go past and put it in the post, it's going to be late.
Keep safe and well x

Next time I say I'm going to town, remind me not to go! I am very much NOT a shopperGirl in sports shop brought out a box, a pair of size 5's of the trainers I'd chosen. Except she'd picked up the wrong box, and there was only one trainer in it anyway. Then disappeared for ages – I thought she'd forgotten me and gone to lunch or something, lol. Came back and told me there might be a pair arriving in the next delivery on monday. By this time I was dripping with sweat – no wonder they wear shorts and t-shirts to work – and I mumbled that I'd pop in next week. It was a lie, I can't be bothered to go back, lol. SA in M&S asked me if I was OK, I said no but then I'm a really bad shopper and I need a cig, she burst out laughing and said something, I can't remember what it was but she really cheered me up
All the shops seemed to have their heating turned up to the maximum setting, I had to change my clothes when I got home
I can't believe people actually enjoy doing this stuff, lol.
Mr tru was out in the garden with Scampi, Scampi was digging, mr tru didn't stop him then he let him in to run around downstairs. I asked why he didn't stop him digging or at least keep him in the kitchen afterwards and he said “you saw from the window, why didn't you stop him?”. Errr....what?! When I got home, mr tru hadn't even opened the curtains and there was still mud on the lounge and kitchen floors. I said I was hot and thirsty and I'm not moving til I've had a cup of tea and a cig. He told me how thirsty he was too, he'd been busy moving DVDs – from one shelf in the bedroom to another. Then said he was going to get the decorations out of the loft and could I come upstairs so he could pass them down to me. I repeated I'm not moving til I've had a cup of tea and a cig. He huffed a lot because he had to wait. Later on, he decided to project manage the temporary chicken run then took over, he started drilling and bolting (why?) and has done it in such a way that there's a big gap that's going to be very difficult to fill, how am I supposed to attach a polythene sheet to a plastic shed? He got more moany, huffy and sarcastic as they day went on, he's been getting worse over the last couple of years and I'm sick of listening to him now.
The mud wasn't cleaned from the floors so I'll be doing that this morning. I haven't thought past that, I'm still too angry, lol.

Morning everyone.
Thanks for the thread JackieO. Fingers are still crossed here for Bowie.
TA - at least your OH will have the pre-op before Christmas. Battle through the crowds.
Tru - thanks for the carol again, I really enjoy them.
Yesterday I got really frazzled with Mum, she overloads me with things to do all the time and expects me to jump to it. After adding seven tasks on the run I (bit like Tru) told her to just give me five minutes. She even called for something whilst I was having a wee.
In the evening she decided to discuss her will and was worried about it being valid still as 1) one of the beneficiaries is dead (my brother) and 2) the witness is also dead and 3) my address in it is wrong. I quickly sent a text to the solicitor who drew it up, he's a family friend, who just as quickly reassured her that all is OK with it.
Another neighbour rang to say he'd left a wee Christmas tree for me in my hall. He's also getting some venison for me. He'll get some holly with berries in return.
Just to add to my frazzle nPower rang me at 7.30pm wanting to talk about my change of tariff, when she asked if it was convenient for me my reply was delivered in a short but polite sentence. !!!!!! Friday at 7.30pm! I'll call them on Monday.
This morning I'm dropping off things for the son of one of my Argyll neighbours. He's at uni here so often brings stuff down. Then I'll take Mum shopping and she'll, no doubt, want to potter round Dobbies too. I'm looking forward to SCD semi-final tonight.
Happy Saturday.0 -
Morning all
Dgd has been up since 5, writing cards and notes. We are going to the panto later, that well known classic, Dr Who saves Christmas!
It should be entertaining especially since I'm going with a group of dgd school mummies and one is an alpha mummy who gets hysterical if people don't do EXACTLY as she demands.
Tonight I'm babysitting and tomorrow we may go and view a couple of properties.
Have a good day everyone.
Hugs HesterChin up, Titus out.0 -
Morning All
Fingers crossed for Bowie JackieO.
Hope you get all your DMs jobs done Gers!
Had a lovely meal out last night, good food and good company. I only had a couple of drinks and was home by 11.30. I'm going to a friends for dinner tonight too, really looking forward to a good catch up.
There are some cabinets in the kitchen and a new back door, it's amazing how quickly things are coming on now. I managed to have a good clean round before I went out and even mopped the floors, hopefully it will stay dust free for the weekend.
Going for a shower in a minute then go out and do all the bits of shopping I need as I have to wait in this afternoon for the dishwasher. I'll try and get to the library too so I have something to do whilst I'm waiting!
Hope you all have a good weekend. Take care. XX0 -
Good morning everyone :hello:
This is the second time I have come downstairs and switched the computer on this morning. The first time I was not woken by foxes or owls but by the loud demands of a full bladder. Anyway, I managed to go back to bed for a couple of hours and now I feel rested properly.
There are quite a few of us feeling stressed by the sounds of it. I still haven't finished the wrapping or sorted out my bedroom. I just can't get myself motivated to crack on with it. I did do something super scary yesterday though and went to our new Lidls on my own the day after it's official opening. It was hellishly busy and I ended up almost having a panic attack but I kept it together and managed to get some shopping. It won't be worth me shopping there again though as I had to pay £16 in taxi fares - £8 each way and I can't save that much on a normal shop for us.
We have the grandchildren sleeping here tonight. I will get my card making stuff out again and we can make some special cards together. The girls are going Christmas shopping this morning so I will be getting them up in an hour or so to start getting ready.
Fish, chips and mushy peas are on the menu tonight, hubby is cooking as usual on the weekends so I will enjoy having a break from cooking.
Well, I hope you all have a great day whatever you are up to, take care xx0 -
Morning everyone, thanks for the carol TRU.
Another member here of the bad nights sleep club, seem to have tossed and turned for most of the night and then I couldn't wake up this morning
No time to be tired though as seriously need to catch up on chores today, there is Mt Ironmore to tackle and the floors need mopping. At some point will need to pick up some fresh veg etc as the fridge is bare but at least nothing has gone to waste.
Had a lovely meet up with my pal yesterday, we went to a garden centre roughly in the middle of our houses and put the world to rights for a couple of hours. She was treated for brain cancer four years ago and plans to walk across Iceland for a BT charity next year, she will be camping out which in itself is amazing as my pal likes her creature comforts and usually doesn't do anything unless she can go 5 star! Good on her for such endeavour.
DB is taking Mum over to her bungalow today as she has been worrying over what's there, at least it's relatively mild at the moment and it won't be too cold. Not sure about the rest of the weekend, will have to wait and see.
:j to Dumpling on your trip out, fingers and paws crossed for Bowie dog, deep breaths to all struggling and thinking of our poorly friends.
Take care folks x0 -
Good morning,
Thank you JackieO for the thread.
Hugs and well wishes for all the poorlies and those who need them.
Last night gig was great fun, I had such a lovely time, they were all Italians around my age group so they all knew the songs and joined in, the food and wine were fantastic and the atmosphere amazing. I don't remember when I last had such fun. But it brought to me with renewed strength that I would really like to go back to Italy, not necessarily forever but for extended periods of time. It feels like I have been away for too long, 33 years. DH is English and so are my kids, so they cannot really understand this feeling, they just see jolly old mummy having a good singalong.
Won't fret about what can't be changed, for the time being at last.
The wine must have been good quality because I have no headache or hangover. I am a lightweight drinker so I am glad for no side effects of my few drinks yesterday.
Speaking of weight, I am really concerned about my weight, yesterday afternoon I went to the dr and got weighed, I have put back everything I had lost in the last few years. Very frightening, especially considering that I would like to be in good shape when my hip replacement op comes up. Going to stay with my mother is not going to help, but at least now I have the excuse that "my doctor told me to lose weight" to avoid being overfed cakes and stuff.
Apart from the Christian bit, which is the least noticeable these days looking around, I detest Christmas and all its excesses. It is the reason why I am going to Italy, to avoid the mayhem that comes with it, heaving shops, piped music, all that caboodle. My mum is also not too bothered and lives in a very small town in the hills, no big shopping centres, should be fairly quiet. The food thing is not about being Christmas, it is about being with my mum, who doesn't understand low fat, low carb, no cakes....
Having a lazy morning and will pop to the allotment later on to help a friend cut raspberry canes in preparation for next year. Glad it's not raining.
Not a clue re lunch/dinner, it will be soup and veg of some sort or another.
Have a good day. Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0
