In my view it is probably best to just metaphorically shrug your shoulders and go on. I make mistakes, banks make mistakes, everyone makes mistakes. Best to 1. try and mitigate any problems and get back on track and 2. get what compensation you can - you will probably get more by being firm but nice to them and 3. if you like the bank then just stay with them it is unlikely to happen again.0

They just said it was an internal error and that they had put procedures in place so that this wouldn't happen again... normal stuff! They also sent me a letter that I can freely distribute saying that they were totally responsible for the error, suggesting I pass this on to any companies affected or to explain why I have a new current account.0 -

Quite a reasonable outcome, really. At least they didn't blame it on 'external factors beyond their control'.I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.0

Who said I had all my eggs in one basket? We have other savings in accounts paying pretty well (but limited total amounts, eg regular savings getting 4% and 5%), the full £20k in 2 Santander current accounts, and several more.
See earlier note about the ISAs, they are not too bad at all, actually, as we move them around as necessary - ensuring we get the best interest we can find on these, they are needed as our ordinary savings at better rates max out above the £1000 tax allowance.
Thank you, but I do read the savings advice on this website (and in the forums) regularly.
You said in your original post:Me: there was nearly £900 in the account, where is it?
Them: we've sent a cheque automatically, apparently.
Me: not good enough, I'm out of cash, how can I get some for use over the weekend?
So that's says you only have accounts with them and have no money elsewhere so I assumed it was true!. But obviously you were only saying that to make out they put you in a bad situation because you have £40k in Santander accounts you can access!.0 -
Correct! One would have hoped they would have come up with a quick solution, but no!0
