Do I need contents insurance if I rent a room in someone's home?

I rent a room in someone's house. They cover all of my bills and I rent an ensuite bedroom/bathroom. The renters (the are 2 others) also have our own kitchen. Do I need renter's insurance, or would this be covered under my landlord's home insurance? Thanks.

Depends what you want cover for. Personal contents? Then yes. If not then probably not.

What does personal contents mean? My laptop and phone is already insured on gadget insurance. I am wondering if DVDs, clothes etc. would be covered under the home insurance of my landlord?
  • No it wouldn't be, as they belong to you.
  • You need your own insurance. From experience contents polices do not cover the belongings of a lodger as you are not family.
