Travel insurance to "dangerous places"

My wife is from South America and sadly our Government advises against travel to parts of her country - often places which are safer than some parts which the FCO say are safe.
Any ideas about how to get travel insurance which will cover us? I am worried that if I get sick I will be refused the bill.

Had no problem getting insurance for my son to go on a 5 week trip to Colombia last summer.
Does she intend visiting the "dangerous" places whilst there?Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
Yes we do as there are some amazing places which are "only essential travel only" (what is essential travel?)peachyprice wrote: »Had no problem getting insurance for my son to go on a 5 week trip to Colombia last summer.

However I checked a mainline insurance and they said it is only places where all travel is advised against they don't cover, not "only essential travel" so I should be fine.
Amazingly the FCO says half of Colombia is of a similar risk to Bagdad in Iraq or Kabul in Afghanistan, which doesn't seem quite right.0
