University interviews

My son is doing a round of interviews for a Graphic Design course at Leeds College of Art and Middlesex. Does anyone have experience in this process, and have an idea of the percentage of prospective students to offers made? We haven't encountered this before, and expect it is due to the course.

The interview certainly shouldn't be a surprise - I've been to lots already this year (as Taxi Driver)

I interviewed at both those universities for arts courses but that was nearly 15 years ago now :eek:. I didn't take my parents with me, nobody did, so I recommend staying away. I doubt the intentions of the interview will have changed much, they'll want him to talk reasonably eloquently about his portfolio of work, his influences, his processes, his ambitions/plans for future work and why he thinks that particular course is the perfect way for him to realise those dreams.

If thestudentroom.com forum still exists that used to be a great place to get info from other students/prospective students.

My sister had interviews for architecture courses, to show her portfolio

Your son is now a young adult, he should have researched the likelihood of interviews for himself

Parents going to open days is completely standard now and expected. Not to the actual interviews but now universities are chasing students, not the other way round (with a few exceptions like Oxford and Cambridge and medicine)

It may be acceptable for oarents to go now but that doesn't mean that it's essential.

In my experience, it is pretty normal for parents to turn up to open days with their offspring. Some universities separate them though.

The interview process is pretty straightforward. I would say that is actually easier for an art course as the portfolio provides a focal point and can potentially trump any academic shortcomings.

Open days, yes, Interviews, NO! By all means help with transport but then go find a brew somewhere and wait for them to come back

Universities expect it and since parents are likely to be contributing financially, why wouldn't they want to be involved? Nobody said it was essential but the university application system has changed a ,lot since the 1980s
