Paying cheque payable to someone else into my bank account

Is it possible to pay a cheque which is payable to someone else into my bank account and if so do they just write on the back Pay "my name" and sign it. I believe this use to be the case but I am not sure now. Does anyone know the current situation please?

  • No longer possible.

The cheque must be paid into an account in the name of the payee.

It's not going to happen. If the person that the cheque is made out to doesn't have an account then their options are to open one, use a cheque cashing service for a fee, ask for payment in another form, or get the cheque reissued in your name.

I watched a documentary not long ago that was calling into question how much attention banks pay to the security of cheque payment and the names written on them. As a test a small group of people all wrote a cheque each for a small amount and they swapped them between each other then tried paying them into the bank, each paying in a cheque not made out to them.

    Not one was rejected.

And they probably did the same thing with other people and the banks noticed it and declined, but that would make such boring TV...

Back to the OP , normally they are crossed A/C Payee so they cannot be paid into another account, on some occassions there are the those not crossed (very rare) and they can be countersigned and paid into a 3rd party account.

Depends on the crossing: If the crossing says "A/C Payee" it must be paid into an account which bears the name of the payee. If the crossing is open, i.e. two lines with nothing written in between the lines, the payee writes on the back, "Pay to the order of [your name]" and signs it.

That certainly used to be possible, but the OP wants to know if it's still possible.

It's something I wondered about a few days ago, but got round wanting to put a cheque in my husband's name , into an account in my name, by paying it into our joint account, then transferring, so I never got to ask the question of the bank.

Not really, the OP wants to know if it's possible with a cheque that they may or may not have, and Anthorn's answer provides the explanation for the situations in which the cheque is uncrossed (to my mind very, very unlikely these days) or if it's crossed (as the huge majority of cheques are).
  • Nowadays the bank would not allow it even if it was uncrossed (highly unlikely these days)staff would face disciplinary action if the cheque bounced or it was found to be fraudulent in any way.

Years ago, at least in rural areas, uncrossed cheques would circulate for months or years, with a whole list of signatures.

Soemthing to do with the taxman apparently,
