    FIL has mild dementia, and doesn't really 'settle' anywhere without MIL at his side.

    Last time he was admitted to hospital - heart problems - he was so distressed and adamant that he did not want to stay (because in his view there was nothing wrong with him) that eventually MIL brought him home again, on the understanding that she would have him back on the ward by 8 am the next morning for the tests etc they wanted to run.

    Obviously the OP's situation may have been resolved by now, but that is an option to explore, perhaps, should something similar happen in future?
