Are you sure, in the past its been the Police who report to crown, who then decided if to press charges. I wrote off a company car, it was nothing to do with H&S. It might have changed,

I deliberately used the word "Potentially"

The chances of a prosecution are fairly remote but that along with most companies wanting to follow best practice when it comes to H&S means most decent employers will follow the guidelines

It is not unknown for an emloyer to want to inspect an employee's vehicle if it is to be used for business on their behalf.

For instance, Dominos Pizza carry-out a thorough inspection of any delivery driver's own vehicles prior to including them on the company business insurance group policy.

If the op's son's car is inspcted and found to require work, there is nothing stopping him getting quotes to get the work done elsewhere.
