I'd recommend it, as it's an easily digestible read that you can take in small chunks. I think it may have been viva that suggested it, back when it was a bargain ebook for a couple of quid!

It explains all sorts of interesting stuff like why (which seems obvious once its spelled out) that the US and the Soviet Union were facing each other with armies in Europe, while having a largely demilitarised mutual border (the Ice Curtain) at the Bering Straits.

I'll make a note of it. I'm on a 'read two buy one' system at the moment as I have far too many books I haven't read!

  • Excellent thread Viva.

The last 'economics' books I read were Tim Harford's - Undercover Economist, The Logic of Life, and Adapt.

They're a great starting point for anyone looking to understand the interactions between economics and every day life.

On a parallel matter, the one of the podcasts that fills my commute to work is the Freakonomics one; very fascinating. The current ones are about evidence-based medicine and Cochrane Collaborations and medical reversals. Brilliant stuff.

Thanks Zag. I just went to look for the Freakonomics podcast, but googled it slightly wrong (I mixed up your post and Hamish's and googled half of each). Accidentally found a list of Tim Harford's favourite 5 economics podcasts of 2016. Unsurprisingly, Freakonomics makes the list:

Also now a series of books. Good read.

    Not books.

But did anyone catch the mark thomas podcasts that he produced around about the time of the GFC ?

There was an interview with Vince Cable where he was pretty candid about his views on the banks.

This was before he was business secretary. He soon learnt his limitations in office!

Thanks Stevie. I haven't read that for years. Is it worth going back to for the newer chapter on the GFC? I read the old version.

No idea, only saw the original.

I've mentioned this on another thread today, so putting here with a link.

Nick Davies wrote Flat Earth News. It isn't an economics book, but is one that would sit well on a bookshelf alongside economics books. It is about how quality journalism is diminishing. It was written a few years ago (2009), before the debate about fake news came to the fore, but is still pertinent
