Although zagfles description of " dorm bed" isn't so far from the truth, I think, for such a long journey, and if you can afford it, business class is worth it.

How long do you think it would take to build up that level of Avios?

And have you ever tried booking business class seats to Australia via Avios? Availability is virtually nil unless you get online at 1am 355 days ahead of the flight.

No harm in staying up to 1am once to get those seats. Particularly as there are 2 Bus class seats released for every flight.

I accept that it can take a while and some determination to build up a wad of Avios, but it is possible. Credit card take up bonuses, Tesco clubcard deals, actually flying BA, keeping an eye out for bonus deals etc. Our best trick is the BA Amex card that gives a 2-4-1 voucher, so only need enough Avios for one flight not 2.

When I went to Australia on holidays, 10 years ago, I flew business class and it was the best choice I could have made!
It was all part of the holiday already instead of just "a way to get there", it was exciting and fun, 25 hours didn't felt so bad, and best of all, absolutely no jet lag when I got there (as I've never slept so well), allowing me to start the australian part of my holidays right away.
    I went with Qantas, though.

So if you can afford it, I surely recommend it!

  • ScarletBea, that's just what I was saying to my OH this morning. I would be actually looking forward to the flight instead of gritting my teeth ready for the endurance test! Lots to think about.
  • Other thoughts.

Price up flying business class from other European cities such as Oslo.

    You might find significant savings,

    Hi all,

Quick question.... if I were to take the option of staying in a transit hotel on a long haul trip, would my luggage go straight through to destination?

Would the flights on different days be considered all in or would I have to check in again?

As others have said, this is a great idea, but I would be concerned that I would in fact be breaking the journey or something odd like that!

I hope I have made sense there, and thanks.

We can't advise based on this information. You'd need to ask the airline.

Hi and thanks. Yes it is hypothetical alright, but just thought that maybe someone else had done something similar at some point.

I suppose, thinking about it, if I book a through flight and ensure a long layover in a transit airport it would work ok.

Not necessarily, it all depends on what arrangements airlines have with their ground handlers at transit airports.
If there aren't long period storage arrangements, then your checked bag would not be labelled to your final destination.

I haven't stayed in a transit hotel but have travelled business class on BA, Emirates and Malaysia Airlines. If I were travelling long haul and could afford it I would definitely DEFINITELY go business class. There is no comparison. But, you will be spoiled for Ryanair next time!
