parsnips in bottles 2016
After a terrible year in 2015 ( so bad I didn't bother to post my results) I am back on form with my parsnips in bottles. I changed the growing spot and mixed up some new growing medium to put in the bottles; it's rather temping to stay with old soil after you have spent ages mixing compost with soil to get a good growing medium, but reusing it can probably lead to disease contagion. So far I have harvested 20lb, but I have another 16 bottles which I have lifted and put in the greenhouse. I have stuck with Goliath again this year and about 28% of the parsnips so far have weighed 10oz or above. I also grew some in the 25kilo plastic bags my coal comes in, I got about 3lb from one bag; I will grow some more in bags next year.
The one thing I did discover this year was the wonders of the microwave oven. I bought one after my fan oven finally failed ( I had only had it for 23 years, you can't rely on anything now days). I used the microwave for par boiling the parsnips, and I have to say this is the best way to do it, they are just right then for roasting, which is the only way I like my parsnips.
Below is a link to my previous parsnips postings for anyone new to the forum, the 2014 has some pictures on it.
