Will a techie explain why a restart is different from turning off and on.jbainbridge wrote: »Turning off and back on again will not work.0 -
next time you PC goes down check the connection by using your phone and wifi. If both phone and PC are not working then it is router or isp. If the phone can surf then it is your PC.
Now there is a bit of free software for Android phoned called 'Ping&DNS' that may assist you, in tracking down reliance. the first number to ping is the gateway of the router, the second is something like BBC.CO.UK
Grumoycrabfish. Power up resets everything unless it has physically gone duff.
Sometimes devices are jammed up (corrupted) and do not fully recognize a reset, so are not completely wiped, and a reset does not fully reset. This can happen due to power spikes and bad programming, but there could be other random causes too.
Remeber those posts asking you to remove the battery while pressing buttons on the laptop, they want to make sure to you reboot, not resent, and do not want any residual charge keeping it from working0 -
We had this same issue this morning. Held down the sky hub reset button for 20 seconds, and voila! (Performs ip reset apparently )How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 3.24% of current retirement "pot" (as at end December 2025)0

Remember the above, it is a top tip. and it cures many a wifi problem and Ethernet problem on PCs and laptops. Can be a waste of time to repair or fix, just to find out it is still not working, just delete and it will be picked up as new. This happened with me yesterday. The ethernet connection and the wifi did not work on my laptop. The W10 was an upgrade and not bought already installed. Also the wifi on my phone was working.
So the Plusnet tech support guy got me to delete the wifi adapter and then restart the machine. Apparently the restart reinstalled the wifi network adapter.
This got both the ethernet connection and the wifi connection to work again. I only had to reenter my network security key for the wifi.0 -
Bizarre. I resolved a support issue like this tonight.jbainbridge wrote: »If your Windows 10 machine won't connect to the internet today - RESTART it.
That is <Start Menu> <Power> <Restart>
Turning off and back on again will not work. Had several people call today with this and restarting has got them back online again!0 -

Windows 10 is trying to be clever. When you 'Shutdown' it closes your programs and saves the state of the machine. On start up it restores your empty desktop. This means that shutdown and start up are quick.
A restart on the other hand fully shuts the system down - it then has to start up from scratch - which takes longer. In this case the restart seems to help the network issue.0 -

Unless you disable 'Fast Startup', suits me to disable this, it's said that it can improve performance if you use an ssd, also I don't always want my OS disk locked down.

This (losing internet connection) is quite a big issue. If only Shutdown did what is says...(PS. a restart invariably solves this)

Usually this turns out to be your Wifi card driver needing an update. Download the wifi driver to a USB using another computer and then uninstall the existing driver.
Reboot and then install using the USB. Also, BIOS requiring update can also cause this issue.0
