having valid insurance is not a requisite of "taxing" a car , the insurance database is not checked , only an MOT if required

According to gov.uk for some reason you need insurance cert. if you live in Northern Ireland
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

You technically may be able to tax a car without having insurance but all taxed cars must have insurance - even if they are garaged and not in use. My father's car was sitting unused on private land and I did not renew his insurance. Even though the car was still taxed and not on the road, we were fined £100. Apparently all vehicles need to have valid insurance unless they are on a SORN notice.

Very true, and god forbid that your tax renewal and insurance renewal fall on the same day - some insurers don't update the records quickly, meaning you cant renew your tax online as they cant see that you have valid insurance. so you have to go and queue in a post office with paper copies of everything. So much for online convenience!!

I am probably thinking back to the good old days of queueing in the Post Office to renew tax. You definitely had to have insurance certificate then, and if the insurance was not in the name of the registered keeper you had to ensure the RK's name was on the insurance.

I thought they did check for insurance when you did it online, but stand corrected.

That reminds me of when our car, parked on the street, was damaged by another car being pursued by the police. The police called to say they thought our car had been damaged, but I had to produce MY insurance - and I'd done nothing!

DVLA probably thought lets make more money by letting keepers tax the vehicle even with no insurance in place and when they do tax it we run an insurance check and fine them for not having a valid policy or SORNing the vehicle.

Im guessing there are more untaxed cars than they are admitting to.

not at all. The requirement is to continuously insure a vehicle unless it is declared SORN. Therefore the time for the check is when the insurance runs out. If it is not on SORN then by definition the insurance must be renewed at that point in time, and will be penalised if it isn't. In that sense therefore quite separate to whether vehicle tax has been paid since that could be due at an entirely different date

Someone actually designed a relatively well thought out processes to use the technology available IMHO...

Ok, well to be safe, i may renewal on NYE, and carry a print out of the receipt in my email box. Strange how this information is not available on the V11, and i could not find information on the DVLA website

Anyone, certainly in England, can check on the tax and MoT due date status of any car. All you need is the Reg and the Make. Google 'MoT check' and follow the GOV link. If it's a VW you have to enter Volkswagen, otherwise it won't work, so maybe the same with abbreviating other makes? Just make sure both tax and MoT are paid/valid before that due date. If you pay online, the tax payment is confirmed immediately by email if you tell them yours and the MoT details are on the printout you are given on the car passing. You can check it's currently insured or not, as of the time of enquiry, on the MID database.
