What to do and what to wear in Geneva at Christmas

Bit of a dual post.

I am flying out to Geneva for Christmas (20th - 27th December) and staying in a Youth Hostel . I don't have any plans as such just fancied a bit of adventure somewhere I've never been!

I realise most things will be closed for the Christmas season but does anyone have any recommendations of things to do over the time or places to visit?

Also, what kind of winter gear is needed do you think? I've had a look and everything has come back with skiing info but I won't be skiing.

I've purchased, some cabin socks, a couple of sets of base layers, a mid layer pullover and a woollen pullover from Aldi and I thought I would try and pick up some of those fleece lined leggings from Primani or somewhere equally glamourous.

I planned on wearing my Doc Martin boots and my Superdry windbreaker. But I really struggle to manage my pain if I am cold so I'd rather be forewarned if that wont be enough before I get there!

Thanks :)

Berne is a nicer Christmasier place.
Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.
  • It's bone numbingly cold at the moment so thermal underwear is called for.Gloves and a bonnet too. It's unusual for it to snow in Geneva but recently there has been more snow and ice, especially ice.try the glocals.com site for fun things to do.

It can get a wee bit icy by the Lac though:

The traditional cafes in the old town were nice places to sit-out the cold though - and I bet they are a bit more salubrious than when I spent a year there. They were just beginning to smarten the old part of the city-up - A regular cafe renversee and a small glass of that strange strong spirit (whose name I forget) is good insulation gainst the cold. :)
