  • I actually have no idea if there are other children, but if there were he kept it very quiet! If he had any more I'm pretty sure his family don't know anything about it.

I hope this works out well for you, and for your mum.

I recently discovered that a relative on my estranged father's side had died intestate, and that my brother and I (along with several others) are beneficiaries to his estate. We hadn't seen or heard from our father for over 30 years and we actually only discovered his death 4 years ago, when we were contacted about the inheritance.

My dad's immediate family (his parents) just cut us off without looking back, after our parents' divorce, so we were concerned that there may be some bad feeling about our inheritance. In fact, we have been made aware that several of the relatives have expressed an interest in contacting us and we're hoping that maybe something will come of that. When I think about it, these folk are all 2 generations down the line from my grandparents and are no doubt completely unaware of any family divisions. Not that I care anyway, as you commented, your mum has paid for your care so it will be nice to treat her with the cash. A sentiment shared by me and my brother after living hand-to-mouth with our mum working all hours to provide for us, unlike my father.

Let's hope that the house gets a good price and you get a lovely big windfall! :)
