Many of these places are businesses that make money disguised as not for profit.
Many of the dogs are dog napped dogs that were lost and grabbed by kennel-nappers that stalk lost dog groups on face book and other sites.

They work hand in hand with rehoming centers and everyone gets paid.
Hence why most dogs are ok to be re-homed as they had perfectly good homes before they were held for ransom by the kennel nappers.

That is the cold hard truth behind this flowery rose tinted doing it for the dogs charade.

Whilst your first point is obviously correct, it's also true to say that some rescues make it so difficult for genuine adopters to take on an animal that it can drive some people into the arms of backstreet breeders and those whose pets continually have "accidents".

Its really really not difficult to get a rescue dog if you really want one. As I said earlier, you can walk into somewhere like Manchester Dogs Home and walk out with a dog.

Should it be that easy? Probably not, it should be much harder to get hold of an 8 week old puppy too!

I'm really surprised that it's that easy.
I've watched Paul O'Grady at Battersea & thought there must be lots of background checks that they don't show on the programme but maybe not.

I went to MDH when I was looking for my current dogs. There were none suitable at the time but if I'd wanted I could have left with a dog, no problems, others were.

I understand your frustration OP. I've had a similar problem trying to get a companion for my rabbit from a rescue. I fully support them being careful who they rehome too but sometimes it can feel like they just don't want homes. I've contacted multiple rescue centres and this is some of their responses :

"Yes, we'll be in touch once a suitable bunny comes in" (about 2 years ago now).

"Your rabbit might not be suitable for a companion since he was hand reared"(plausible but not definite).

"Our policy is to never rehome rabbits singly (?? It'll have a companion, mine)

"It's just easier for us to rehome rabbits in pairs" (This one was just after the rescue put out an appeal on the radio for homes for rabbits as they had so many).

"It's easier for us to try to bond the rabbits we get in here, than risk it with yours"

"With your rabbit's age now, he might not accept a companion" (True, since I've now been waiting so long)

To be honest, if I'd known what it was going to be like, I'd have gone ahead and got another rabbit from a reputable breeder when my bunny was young.

Believe me, PO'G only shows the lovely modern side to Battersea

Those are the lovely new kennel block, behind them are rows and rows of what I'd discribe as sheep pens

Full of dogs that no one will home

Battersea ( and Windsor ) are desperate to get dogs out. You can turn up on the day and as long as you are believable, you can walk out with a dog

Battersea kills so many healthy dogs that it is unbelievable. 2 of my friends worked there and left because of that.

I'm slightly gobsmacked by this. Not being a particularly pushy person (really, honest), you'd probably only get one email from me. Not coming back would suggest to me that the rescue centre wasn't fully committed.

    ..

Me too. I'd only make one enquiry, not from lack of interest, but presuming a lack of interest/no suitable dogs from the rescue pov.

I can't say for sure it doesn't happen, but having been involved in re-homing dogs and transporting them to rescues up and down the country, I can say that the kennels I went to ( and their were many), were staffed by people fighting for money with genuine rescues in their care.

I think people should know I love dogs, there's been a minimum of one dog in my life since I was 5, there's been 6 at once. We're rarely apart as they come to work with me, they've pretty much hit the jackpot living at Chez Bugs.

However, I wonder what Battersea are supposed to do. If dogs are sticky, do you keep them until they pass naturally and turn away a lot of other dogs, or do you put a time line on the sticky ones and say if they haven't gone, you put them to sleep and free up space for a dog needing a rescue.

Until there is a rescue place for every animal needing a place, something unpleasant is going to happen one way or the other.:(
  • Are there any local small rescue centres near you? We got ours from a very small rescue that was on facebook. They had pictures of him so I messaged them and they said I could come see him. Went, filled in some paperwork and brought him home. They did ask about our house etc but I said he's going to be a house cat. Can a friend recommend a shelter for you?

And if people microchipped their dogs and kept the details up to date that wouldn't be an issue.
Gitdog is a poundie. Untraceable, unclaimed, and would have been PTS after the 7 days without the rescues that you're knocking.
