You could tell them you will need the car recovered to them and ask them if they are willing to cover the cost? Can they send out a recovery patrol to view the fault?
  • When I explained to them that I couldn't just drive to them for them to inspect it, I asked if their warranty would cover my towing costs (which they could claim from the manufacturer no doubt, as I'm sure they'd claim labour costs if they'd fitted it).

Update, they are now giving me a replacement. This I feel is just to save them face on various car forums as they do business there, and I brought it up on one of their threads.

In future, I think I will be buying with a credit card from now on and just getting them to sort it out when they (IMO) start acting illegally.

I would do that as well, but if a dispute is started they can take months to resolve as your case will go into a quiet substantial queue so you would have to buy and pay for another whilst the dispute is in resolution.

How have they acted illegally? The onus was on you to return the part.

By insisting that I refit the part to my car and get my car to them at MY EXPENSE, this expense would NOT be refunded even if the part were deemed faulty by them.
So tell me, is it legal for customers, through no fault of their own, be left out of pocket when purchasing something that is faulty?

Remember, I offered to take just the part to them and show them it was faulty.
