VW goodwill

Hello - when we had our second child I bought a VW Passat as I believed it would be a safe and reliable car.
But 18 months on my VW Passat 1.9 TDi has an electrical fault with injector no. 1.
In the past VW has replaced these because they didn't work properly.
But my car is 10 years old so, unsurprisingly, they say there is no more 'goodwill' to customers after that length of time.
I've had the wiring harness in the cylinder head replaced but that hasn't sorted it.
So now it looks like I'll have to fork out around £800 to replace the injector and thousands if I want all four replaced.
That sort of money is beyond me at the moment. I wanted to check if anybody had come across this before and if anybody has any ideas about a way round this.
Thanks very much.

Whos trying to charge you £800 per injector??
  • The local garage which I've used before and have always seemed fair. I think the injector is around £320 but other parts and labour are expected to take it up to around £7-800. What would you expect to pay?

Are you sure it's a 1.9? The 2.0 had a lot of injector problems. These are located within the engine hence the large labour cost.

Not sure why anyone would think an 8.5 year old VW would be reliable?

If its the 1.9 the labour shouldn't be massive.

If you need all four you wont pay x4 the labour as they will be "in there" anyway.

Unfortunately you bought an old car, no matter how you look at it, so reliability was never likely.

Its the problem with old diesels - massive potential bills any one of which can scupper any savings getting higher MPG might have saved you.

Cant offer any other advice other than to suggest next time run with a simpler car like a 1.6 Focus petrol or similar. Might cost a bit more in fuel each week but more less risk of big bills.
  • Yes you're right actually - it is the 2 and not the 1.9.

That explains the world of pain you're experiencing.
