Prepaid Revolut Card warning

Hi All,
Just thought I would give a heads up on The Revolut pre paid master card and a problem I have encountered recently.
I have used my card quite happily for holidays but have had an experience in Ireland that has caused me to think again. I was asked at my hotel at check in to pre authorise my card for €10 against charges for breakfast etc. This is not in itself a problem as I have done this many times before. However, when I checked out it was noted that the €10 was pre paid and they charged me the balance for our breakfasts. I have the receipt and it all looks legit. However, when I got home I see that the chap has charged €50 pre authorisation. And then charged a further €40 on the check out date!
Revolt can't do anything to challenge it for 10 days.
The hotel say it's not on their records.
Then they tried to charge another €5 for a mail order item?
It's worth noting that if any fraudulent transactions occur on your account, you have NO RECOURSE!! you are NOT PROTECTED. It's in the small print, I looked today.
So, use it as a cash card, nothing more.
I will update any progress on this thread.
Rene

It's true that with prepaid cards there is less ability for recourse when things go wrong. It's not clear exactly what happened from your description. Why did you not notice what was happening at the time, on your phone app, and challenge the hotel then instead of waiting until you were home?
    Evolution, not revolution
  • Firstly & most importantly this isn't a warning about the Revolut card. It is a warning about all prepaid cards.

When in France I couldn't make any authorisation against my revolut when in a hotel (again, it was for breakfast!) - it just wouldn't work. They had to just make the charge.

I also think you are doing a massive diservice to revolut - it sounds like they are telling you that you need to wait 10 days before they investigate. If you get nowhere with them, get a copy of the transactions and put this to the hotel.
  • Hi,
The transactions did not show in my app until the day after I returned home. I don't know why there was a delay. When travelling I check my app regularly to ensure everything is correct. The hotel in question has written back this morning, they claim that this is normal practise and the €40 will be unblocked from my card in due course. As for the €5 mail fee, they aren't addressing that. It's the fact that they deliberately took money after I left the hotel that I take issue with. In future I will not allow anyone to pre authorise a pre paid card. They keep the details and can place charges if they wish. It's very difficult to challenge and harder to get your money back.
  • I'm not doing Revolut a massive disservice.
These are facts, I'm outlining a difficulty in the aim to prevent others from suffering the same.
