Hi folks,

Any dental professionals on here that can give me bit of advice ref teeth whitening or anyone experienced this product??

I have purchased (thru my dentist) a 2 week coarse of teeth whitening gel called Pola Night 16%. I started last week and wore overnight in the moulded mouthguards as instructed by my dentist ... However on 4th night started suffering terrible shooting pains (zingers!!) which it seems is not uncommon. The pain was bad enough for me to stop for last couple nights. Having looked more into this ... i am getting conflicting information on how long to wear it. It seems the common advise is to wear overnight but ive also read suggested wear times of ....

90mins - Overnight??
and
no longer than 30mins??

(all based on 2 week period).

I have contacted the suppliers of Polanight 16% who have responded with the following

"I understand how confusing it can be. Studies have shown that the products are at their most active during the first 30 minutes of treatment therefore it is no longer a requirement to wear overnight. However, you can wear the gel for longer but the benefits will be less after the 30 minutes."

This seems pretty conclusive and will be the way forward for me i think, but it concerns me slightly its such a differing view, i am a little curios as to if anyone else has worn for 30mins period and what the results were?? ... i of course i am trying to achieve the best result for the considerable sum i have paid.

Ask your dentist who provided the treatment. They will have done a thorough check up and give advice and treatment, as necessary.

I really hope you didn't contact the owners of the polanight website , who illegally supply products. The actual owners of polanight are SDI who would refer you back to your dentist.

I have just had a course of whitening through my dentist. He showed me how much gel to put in, gave me all of the info on minimum time needed, sensitivity, how to manage it and which toothpaste to use. There were different strengths if the sensitivity was too high and I was given comprehensive fact sheets from the practice to guide me. I was also instructed to contact him with any questions I had.
He would have answered and resolved all of your questions in a 10 minute check up, what does your dentist say?

Yes, i had similar consultation. Got the fact sheet, although its my dentist supplied factsheet just states use overnight, which differs to official instruction leaflet supplied with the kit that states "90mins - Overnight""

If you look at the web address it comes up as the same as the illegal suppliers of whitening products, SDI the actual manufacturers are bringing legal action against these people.

Ask your dentist, that's what you paid for.

Thanks ... wasnt aware of the difference. I will try contacting SDI

Im well aware i can ask my dentist. However, it is not inconceivable that my dentist might be incorrect or possibly have outdated info.

Im really interested in hearing from "horses mouth" or people that have used the product or have experience with this product to confirm whether 30mins is sufficient and that beyond 30mins sees minimal benefit

So you would prefer advice from people who have no dental knowledge, cannot see you or your teeth, X rays and gum conditions over a qualified individual whom you have chosen to provide the treatment and who can give individualused, clinically informed advice and treatment?

You have already asked advice from criminals who knowingly illegally supply the gels , surely having paid for your treatment you should get your monies worth by getting the advice etc that comes with it?

However due to the sanctimonious and condescending tone of the rest of your post its probably best i just smile :):)

Are the question marks there because you are unsure what that means?

It's the instruction I give to my patients.

The gel needs a minimum of an hour & a half to penetrate the teeth enough to make a change. So - if patients have difficulty wearing the tray(s) overnight, then I tell them that a period less than 1.5h will not produce an effect. But - there is no harm in wearing properly made trays for longer, and the gel is probably active for up to 5h, so 'overnight' will probably get the best effect.

The fact the illegal website is saying 'no more than 30 mins' is probably a reflection that their product is completely unsafe, and a counterfeit knock off of the proper stuff!

Like Brook though - I really cannot see why you are not trusting your dentist's advice, or using the service you've paid for?
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
