Thanks for the links... judging by the pictures on the Australian Ebay sale... I don't think it looks too ugly really.

Does this support 720/50hz or 1080i/50hz?? as that as well as the resolution and the HDCP compliance is part of the forthcoming Sky HD specs

From my inexpert reading : The Aldi listing has the "HD Ready" logo on it - details at Digital TV forum (http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds18570.html) so hence "HD ready" for European broadcasts including Sky.

It was to remove uncertainty about HD compatibility that they introduced the HD Ready certification - see EICTA logo details (http://www.eicta.org/content/default.asp?PageID=249)

Has anyone bought one of these ?

My Aldi still has plenty - no queue outside this morning waiting to grab all of them by 9:15 !!

I'm interested in what the PC resolution looks like and what it can actually be set to. Can it be used "full screen" utilising every pixel ?

Gary, didn't realise you needed to know this info otherwise I would have written it down. If you go and read the specification details on the outside of the box it appears to list a whole series of numbers like this for what it actually supports. May be worth a look.
If I'm passing later today or tomorrow I'll drop in again and get the details.

From the resolution of 1366x768 this set will do 720p natively but 1080i would have to be downsampled. HD sets in the US that do 1080i natively still run around the $4k-$5k mark, res on them is 1920x1200. From what I understand sky will be broadcasting shows in their native format depending on which US station they come from as different networks use different standards. Until HD can be demonstrated in the stores there is no way we can tell if there is a quality difference between 1080i, 720p and 1080i downsampled.

From the indicated resolution it should do 720p and downsample for 1080i, but the key part is the 50hz bit, some of the current LCD/plasma only support these at 60hz which isn't SKY HD compatible.

    cheers

I don't think this set has HDMI. That's the interface most people are favouring for digital AV these days. I think Sky will adopt that standard too. I have a toshiba 23L and it's great and does support some HD signals but I only have a VGA port so unless the HD pictures will come through SCART then I won't be able to get them either.

I don't think this set is really HD ready.
No reliance should be placed on the above.

It is HD ready through its DVI port which has a built in decoder for HDCP. So all you'll need is an DVI->HDMI lead (£15) when sky bring out their HD STB.

You are correct about it not having HDMI but...it does have DVI and a HDMI to DVI adaptor is freely available so maybe...maybe not this less of an issue then with Sky...
