When a recently widowed friend rang her motor insurance company to advise them of her change of status (as they tell you to do) she was rewarded with an immediate 10% hike in her premiums. When she asked why, she was told it was because as she no longer had anyone to worry about her, she may not drive as carefully as she did when she was married. I don't know if this is true, or if it was just the insurance agent being a prat, but I do know how long it took to mop up her tears.
  • When I used to work for an insurance broker people would come in after they had got divorced and expect a refund on their car insurance as they were removing their spouse from the policy.

Usually they were shocked to find out that in most cases "Insured & Spouse" is cheaper on car insurance than "Insured Only" and most on them decided to leave the policies as they were.
