Hi folks. I love poached eggs and am trying, in any case, to get away from frying. I've heard of these poached egg thingummies designed for use with microwaves and this idea, IF it works, would be ideal...
... but does it, does anyone know..?

they are excellent - really quick poached eggs on toast for brekkie. You MUST however pierce the yolk and the white several times and add a few drops of water. Otherwise they explode and coat the microwave with egg.
This is particularly important when your wife has told you this and you ignore the advice thus discovering for yourself that eggs do in fact explode.Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Generous? - Possibly but sarcastic more likely.0 -

Interesting. Some of the devices I've seen on e.g. ebay or amazon appear to enclose the egg. Surely this would prevent any 'coating of the microwave'...?0 -

Tell me about it. I once put a boiled egg in the microwave to finish off because it wasn't quite done. I'd heard that they explode, but I thought that was the shell, so I thought it would be OK as I'd already broken it open. My confidence was reinforced by the fact that it didn't explode after a minute or so in the microwave.
I then took it out, put it on the worktop, and just as I touched it with a fork......
BANG!!
The kitchen was instantly re-decorated with scrambled egg. All up the walls, the ceiling, the cupboards, my jumper, everywhere.0 -

But to answer your original question, they are good, and imho less faff than mucking around with a poaching pan.If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0 -
I do it all the time, depends which one you get though.
I originally used one design that was utter !!!!!! no matter how often I tried. Then I switched to pods floated in water - which works every time. Bowl, water, pod, egg, no piercing, lid. Nuke 1 minute, wait a minute, look, eat.0 -
I personally find the more of a fiddle than poaching eggs in water, and also don't like the texture as much as conventional poached eggs.
But to each their own0 -
My easy stove top method is: a couple of inches of water in pan with dash of vinegar. Bring water to boil, stir, break egg into cup and tip into boiling water. Put lid on pan, turn off heat, set timer for 5 mins, remove egg with slotted spoon, drain on kitchen roll, enjoyNow Mrs FrugalinShropshire:T Proud to be mortgage and debt free:j0

I line a small bowl with cling film, drop in egg, then twist cling film closed. Drop into pan of boiling water for 5 mins, fish out and unseal onto toast. No washing up and less faffing than with microwave gadgeNoli nothis permittere te terere

I didn't expect to chuckle so much at this thread, rather it peeked my interest as I'd seen them, but didn't know anyone who had used them. Thanks for the exploding egg stories.0
