Rented cottage - cleaning question

Options
Hi, slightly random question but something that's been buzzing round my head.

I have rented cottages/apartments in the past and was wondering how much cleaning and tidying would be expected by the owners, before I check out? I would never leave dirty dishes or rubbish strewn about the place or leave it mucky, but should I be mopping floors, cleaning sinks etc before I leave?

Any owners out there who can give a view please?

Cheers

  • No, I would expect a thorough clean to be part of the rental price. I'd leave it clean & tidy, but won't be hoovering or mopping.

As above, we always leave them clean and tidy but no need for a spring clean. The only exception would be if we had accidentally made some kind of spectacular mess.

Feedback from owners has always been very appreciative of the state we have left their houses in. Apparently, some renters leave the places in a shocking condition.

Assuming you are talking about a holiday cottage, I wouldn't be living with dirty sink or dirty floor so these would be cleaned as necessary.

As I have dogs I would hoover the floor, probably more than once during the holiday.

I treat any holiday cottage as I would my own home.
  • Thanks for replies, really appreciate it
I do leave the place clean and tidy, good to know I on right path

I always Hoover before I leave. I also strip the bed, empty bins, clean the kitchen and bathroom. Having been a cleaner of holiday homes and B&B's I know just how untidy and dirty some people leave them

  • As an owner of holiday caravans and also a cleaning them we would expect washing up done and put away, rubbished removed , we dont expect bathrooms cleaned, dusting or hoovering etc sounds like your doing the right thing.

same here, i would leave the kitchen clean and tidy, hoover and just generally have a look around before leaving.

I would always strip the beds and leave the linen in a pile at the bottom of the bed.
    But thats just me.....

We stay in holiday cottages a lot and always leave them clean and tidy. Beds stripped, all washing up done, kitchen surfaces cleaned. If we have dropped anything on the floor it is vacuumed/swept.

What we do find is that there is a limited mess you can make for a week so it doesnt take much effort to leave the place as you found it.
  • We just rented a cottage and we just got rid of rubbish, did washing up and a clean of kitchen surfaces and tidied everything.

Looking through the book some people seem to have done much more. Personally prefer the system abroad where you can either clean yourself thoroughly or pay for cleaner, you just do washing up and kitchen and empty bins. Then it's really clear what you are responsible for. I guess you could ask owners.

Our owner said she cleaned in between stays so presumably don't expect immaculate. Pre kids I would have made it immaculate though but just didn't have the time this time.

That's what we always do. Seems strange not to.
