Outlook and the default identity problem

I have a Mac running OS X 10.8.5 and Office 2011.
A few days ago I received a warning that my database was damaged and needed to be rebuilt, which I duly did, backing up my computer to an external hard drive before doing so.
After backing up again earlier today, I couldn't eject the external drive so restarted the my computer - and then found my inbox full of dozens of e-mails sent in the last few weeks of November (already read/moved to trash), but 'missing' all incoming and sent e-mails since I rebuilt the database.
I searched for a missing e-mail using the name of the sender, found it but got that horrible message "Outlook cannot open the file because it is not associated with the default identity".
Hours of googling hasn't helped me to solve the problem, so I wondered if anyone here might be able to assist, please?
I back up using Time Machine, but have never before had to look for e-mails...so any help on that front would also be brilliant.
Many thanks for any help you can give.

Hi, we move threads if we think they’ll get more help elsewhere (please read the forum rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board. If you have any questions about this policy please email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.
I’ve moved your thread from the ‘I wanna’ board to the ‘Techie Stuff’ board, where it is better suited.
