Personal Statement help LD Nursing

I know this is not money saving related but I know that a lot of students use this site, I am looking for some inspiration with my personal statement it is really the start of it, my student adviser at college said I need it to have a "punchy start". I want to do learning disability nursing and am a mature student so would welcome any ideas at all to get me started.

Many thanks for reading my post

Isn't the point of a personal statement that it should be, well, personal? If somebody else writes part of it then it's no longer your statement.
  • Hi I am studying Learning Disability Nursing. Have a look at the Winterbourne View hospital inquiry, Francis report (2013), 6 Cs and Strengthening the Commitment. Think about how your experience links in with these. Look at person-centred care as this is a key part of LD nursing. Learning Disability Nursing is generally an undersubscribed course and there is a lot of ignorance around what we actually do, even from people in healthcare professions! I am sure you will be fine, good luck with your application, I hope it all goes well. x
  • For my personal statement for my masters I opened with who I was '3rd year History undergraduate at X uni studied X time periods and also have industry experience'. Obviously written nicer than that!
Then I have a paragraph talking about my work placements, the next about my reasons fro choosing that particular uni and why their course interests me. After that I talk about my current degree and a little paragraph at the end about my part time job and how this is helpful to me.
I found my careers service at uni very helpful in reading my statement and giving me help to improve it.

I'm not an LD Student Nurse but i am a MH Student Nurse.
As i recall for my personal statement i started by just googling personal statements and followed the general format they recommend.
Its hard to advise as it has to personal, i was a Nursing Assistant prior to starting my nursing so i wrote about how my experience matched with what i'd need for the course and also how this had fuelled my desire to become a MH Nurse. I think if you show elements of compassion, empathy and an understanding of the current situation the nursing profession is in that would also be good.
Don't stress too much about it, you'll get to show yourself off properly at the interview hopefully. Good luck!

TBH I found the advisers weren't much good for midwifery and nursing statements - whatever you write apply it as to how it will link to LD nursing, why you want to do it etc and good luck
