OS Daily Saturday 3rd December

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” is fine.

Good Morning chums Up at the squeak of the sparrow this morning as I have lots to do today I want to get some of it done before I go to Rochester for the Dickens festival this morning. I shall get the bus there as parking is a nightmare and just not worth the effort. Its only around 6 miles away so not a problem as the buses are fairly frequent from where I live and only at the top of the road.
I really enjoy it every year and although it can be expensive I steer clear of the touristy things .Lots of free stuff going on, street bands etc and a walk around the cathedral is well worth it.For a tiny town of basically one high street and very little else it pushes the boat out, especially the christmas Dickens festival with lots of people dressing up as characters from his books. It has at times had a quarter of a million folk attending over the weekend.
helps if the weather is kind and today its supposed to be dry I shall be lending my support to the Medway Homeless group as there are so many 'rough sleepers' in Medway. There will be a 'standing protest' this morning in the High Street to highlight the plight of them, which is basically what Mr Dickens did 150 years ago. Hopefully I won't get arrested :):):)
To me, to be living in a western country, in the 21st century homelessness is an appalling thing. I know councils are strapped for cash but there are buildings standing empty in the Medway which could be used as a temporary roof. Last week Medway council evicted a group of rough sleepers from a site in Gillingham, and really just put them back to sleep in shop doorways. Not exactly caring and sharing I thought.

Hope you all have a good weekend and keep warm and dry, which is what a lot of these homeless folk find hard. For what ever reason it seems, that if you are without a roof over your head, there is definitely no room at the inn if you live in the Medway

So I shall have my campaigning hat on this morning :):):)

    Have a good day chums

    Morning everyone

JackieO - thanks for starting us off x

Hugs to those that want/need them x

Happy birthday to those with a birthday x

    Still dark, but mild.

I woke up when DH got up and couldn't get back to sleep so I'm now enjoying peaceful cuppa and brekkie whilst on here.

DH up and gone into work - this is their busiest time of year, DH hates going in on a Saturday but we've been away for the last 2 weekends, so he felt he'd better show willing, I'm working next Saturday and the one after that then off Xmas Eve but am working New Years eve, why on earth we're open no-one can work out! There will be no back office support. At least the bank holiday days work in my favour this year, so I'll be finishing on Weds 21st then off until Wed 28th back for that day, then off until Sat 31st, work 1 day and then off until going back on Tues 3rd Jan - so not complaining.

Yesterday I got my food shopping done, and got another couple of loads washed, dirty wash basket still not empty but has had the menfolks dirty work gear put in - so will keep the WM going today until it's all done. This morning I'll go into town to visit the building society then I'll get home and crack on with washing and I'm hoping to get some baking/cooking done, as I didn't get any done yesterday. The funeral went off ok, the church was packed but so cold, I couldn't feel my feet, so my friends and I came back home and warmed up with hot drinks and sandwiches.

Dinner last night was chicken and mushroom pie (ready made I have to confess but it was on offer and I couldn't make one for how much I paid) menfolk all said it was ok, but not as good as my HM pie. Tonight we'll be having roast duck legs, not quite sure what I'm going to serve with it and have never cooked them before but there's cooking instructions on the packet, so we'll give it a go. I'm thinking I may make a potato bake as the duck needs quite a while in the oven so I may as well utilise having the oven switched on, I'll serve that with steamed broccolli and a red wine gravy (need to find a recipe for this).

    Keep safe and well x

[FONT=Verdana, sans-serif]I didn't get any shopping done yesterday. I had a horrible headache, it eased a bit when I sat down and almost disappeared when I led down. • Morning folks. Have a good day JACKIE. Homelessness is an ever increasing problem throughout the country it seems and well done for doing your bit. Thanks for the festive start TRU - love that one.

Two health connected phone calls yesterday. First for me about my blood test. Dr not happy with the result and I have to go in Monday for some more. Now I am worrying myself silly wondering what's wrong with me now.

The second for Mr TA from St James in Leeds. His cystoscopy has been discussed at the team meeting and they want to arrange the uereteric stenting as soon as poss. He will get an appt for a pre-op assessment in the next 10 days. I'll be glad when he gets that done as he has so many other problems to contend with too.

I still haven't got round to writing my cards so must put my mind to that this afternoon. I want to pop in town this morning for one or two bits and pieces and buy all the necessary stamps too. Money going nowhere just now!

I must make an effort to tidy the freezers out too and get all the Xmas stuff together so I know what I've bought. It's been getting shoved anywhere I could find a space!

I think I'll make a chicken curry for tonight as it's ages since we had one. Maybe I'll find the naans to go with it when I do the promised freezer tidy! I bought some nearing sell-by in Fultons a while back and they are in there somewhere!

Have a good day all and (((HUGS))) as always to LAINEY, LWW, COXY and HILSTEP. As well as the other poorlies and worried. Take care xx

    Morning All

Not sure if it's chilly or not - there is a terrible draft coming from under the kitchen door! At least there is a door for the weekend, walls have been plasterboarded, taped and filled and I can see what's going on. Oh, and there are some lights too.

I went and bought the paint yesterday, nothing like being organised! I'm sure that's the least of the builder's worries at the moment.

Sorry to hear of your SIL dumpling, hope you managed to have a nice meal for your anniversary.

Hope you recover soon RR, your cold sounds rotten.

Thanks for the carol tru - anyone else sing it in their head whilst reading?

Going to meet DD today so we can look at furniture for my living room, I got a new TV that is bigger than the old one and it is too big for the sideboard so will have to have a re-think. It may be time for the sideboard to go, I bought it in a charity shop about 25 years ago for £20 so it hardly owes me anything.

Hope you all have a good weekend, Lainey - how's Mum? Take care. XX
  • Good morning all,

Thank you Jackie for starting us off and have a great day. I feel very strongly about homelessness, as you say in the 21st century how can this happen. I kniw they say some people choose this way of life, but I can't believe many do.

Thank you tru, a lovely carol

Camelot, our DGD bought us a new TV in the summer. It is 43 inches and the standing brackets were at the end of the TV not in the middle, so it wouldn't fit on our TV unit. We bought a modern unit which didn't cost a lot of money, and within that range there was a consul table so we bought that as well. I wasn't a fan of large TVs but it is amazing how quickly you become used to it.

Lainey I hope you managed to have a little time to yourself yesterday, with everything going on, it is important you look after yourself and preserve your strength.

2 DGDs are going to the Clothes Show tomorrow so we will be ferrying them to the station and home again. They will only be on the train for about 10 minutes, they both seem to be looking forward to it. This will be the last year in Birmingham it is moving to Liverpool next year.

TA, try not to worry, easier said than done I know. It might just be an answer lies in the blood tests as to your problems. Things are moving quickly for Mr TA, hope everything is done before Christmas.

Have a good weekend all if you can

I'm up and dressed early because John Lewis texted to say our delivery could be here from 7am. Sod's law says it will arrive nearer the 1pm latest delivery time.

I also didn't sleep well, I kept waking because I felt as if I had a temp and I feel as if I have a cold this morning. DH is still in bed.

Enjoy the Dicken's festival Jackie, we went about 28years ago, I remember DS was still in a pushchair and cried because he was so cold. In fact it snowed heavily and we were staying in our caravan so we cut our losses and came home.

I hope things go quickly for Mr TA's op, DH is still waiting for an appointment to have his stent out. It should have been taken out by now and he's getting very impatient to have it done so he can start getting back to normal.

I spoke to DD tonight, we agreed that either she would come up here tomorrow or I would go down there to see her. I miss her terribly if we don't see each other regularly, although we speak most days, I think she misses me as well.

    Good morning everyone.

Thanks for the thread Jackie and thanks for the carol Tru. And yes Camelot, I sing them in my head too.

It's wet and foggy in Newcastle. Not the same type of sea fret I get at home but proper fog.

Yesterday the lunch was wholly enjoyable. Those of us who had wine had more than than should have but not too much. Food was tasty and sometimes served on weird 'dishes' on a garden theme. We then went to a patisserie for hot chocolate and cake. Lovely. I was in bed by 7.30 and asleep by 8.30.

Today it'll be a much more sedate and ordinary lunch in a pub with my hosts, her father, sister and son in law. My plan is to leave here nonlater than 3pm to get back to Glasgow by 6pm.

Tru - even though I know it'll do no good, please try not to worry. Try to be thankful that a problem has been identified and will be sorted!

Camelot - won't be long before it's all done. Hope you enjoy choosing new furniture.

    Right, have to start moving.

    Happy Saturday to all.

candlelight - That's exactly it, the previous TV had a stand in the middle, this one has 4 metal legs that stick out! I'm going to look for a bench style unit. Wish me luck!

    Morning everyone,

Thanks for the thread Jackie hope you enjoy your day, like many cities Cambridge has a problem with homelessness, it's appalling in this day and age that people should have no home.

Thank you Candlelight, after getting all my chores done in the morning I did have a restful afternoon and evening. My DOH went to pick up youngest SS from the train station as he is home from Uni this weekend, he will drive back up on Sunday so has his car for bringing stuff back etc.
My DB is bringing Mum over this morning, plan is that she stays with us through to Tuesday but one day at a time, it will just be good to have her here.
Thinking of of all our poorlies and those with worried hearts, wishing you rest and peace of mind.
    Take care folks x
