Scottish Power have written to me telling me their advisors will call to discuss amongst other things 'their products'. Since cold calling is outlawed this is their way of getting round things, and not actually calling on you cold but by default you are agreeing to their visit by omitting to get back to them ....as they invite you to do by texting...they will then have your mobile number......visiting their online sight......or sending back a letter in a 2nd class stamped envelope they provide with a form they also provide for the purpose.....so they have your confirmed name and address on file in future.

I can't believe they have the brass neck to do this putting the onus on people who have to stop them coming otherwise they will turn up.

Suddenly they have you on hop when you never asked for it.

Anyone got an email/tel. no./other contact to actually inform Martin Lewis that this thing is happening.

    I don't understand your gripe?
There is a box to check if you do not wish to be contacted for marketing etc.

For me it's the privacy issue

    What privacy issue?
So you swap supplier and you no longer have a smart meter

So what? The novelty of seeing your usage in real time while sitting in your bed drinking a whisky for a nightcap soon wears off.

I have one of these monitors supplied by Eon years ago I checked it for the first week and now it sits in a cupboard doing nothing.

The new supplier will either have to send meter readers or put in their version or, Heaven forbid, you have to read your own meter and give them the reading once a month.

You are talking about your MIL's house having a meter fitted, not yours. Does your house have one?

Yes- as does 3 other properties I am responsible for. 2 of which are commercial and the Smart aspect was transferred - from Gazprom to Total Gas and Power.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Commercial meters are not smart they are AMR - Automated Meter Reading.

You miss the point entirely my friend.

There is a code to text back to them on your mobile. They didn't have your mobile number...but they will if you 'tick the box'.

And then all the people who binned the circular will be doorstepped anyway because THEY never 'ticked their box'.

And so it goes....they have you jumping thro' THEIR marketing hoops when you never asked them to write to you in the first place.

Multiply that by ALL the power companies hitting on you this way telling you they are coming but YOU have to deflect them.
