Vaio will not boot up

My vaio Sony laptop will not boot up small circle at bottom off screen just keeps turning

Exact model and version of windows would be useful.Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0 -
1. Make sure its off - if the small circle is spinning hold the power button down for 6sec; turn it on again - any better?
2. Make sure it is off; take battery out; ensure it is plugged in mains - WITH MAINS SWITCH OFF - hold power button down for 20sec; turn mains switch on; turn it on again - any better?0 -
Held power button for 20 seconds then switched back on ok now0
