Default help - account should be closed

This is my first ever post so thanks in advance. I had an rbs account with an overdraft that basically gained interest over 3 months that I hadn't noticed took me over my limit. My fault entirely but we had moved house the month before, and it was the one account I didn't change address on. I still logged in online to digital services. Received nothing until they closed the account and I had a letter from whoever they sold the debt too. I rang rbs who would have no further to do with me and transferred to the debt agency, I paid in full there and then (18 months ago) and thought no more of it until checking my credit file. Clearscore showed the account as closed, with the default which i accept.Experian and callcredit are showing as the account open and still defaulting every month with £30 owed. Rbs never mentioned that there was still outstanding during the phone call (they said there was nothing on my account and they had shut it), otherwise I would have paid! This is ruining my chances of a job application requiring vetting so I'm holding off my application.
What can I do??! I'll be ringing rbs this morning, I just need to know what I can say. I'm so stressed and worried over this.

Firstly with the default it applies only from the date initially it was registered to the account. Once it is defaulted it will continue to be reported as such until the account is closed.

I'm not so sure about the accuracy of clearscore tbh. I recently queried an electoral roll mis recording and the reply from equifax (whom clearscore present the results from) was that there was a 'glitch' with the data clear score were presenting and be rest assured that equifax did have the correct details.

So you need to check with RBS and get it in writing that the account is closed and register errors with the other credit report agencies who will investigate it with the reporting institution.

As for what to say to RBS ask them:
initially to confirm your previous conversation from their records
what they are reporting the account as.
    who they are reporting to
ask them to send the above to you in writing

    Hope that helps.
  • Well there was no replies, so I rang rbs. After 55mins I've got the wrongful amount which was a mistake on their part cleared, and the default removed as it was put on after I had paid in full. Seems there were lots of discrepancies from rbs and luckily for me it should be removed completely and the default wiped from my file. I guess I shall see when I check experian in 5 working days! I've made notes of the entire conversion, and was assured that notes were being typed as I was on the phone. How much difference does it make being put through to someone helpful!?

... and I had a letter from whoever they sold the debt too. I rang rbs who would have no further to do with me and transferred to the debt agency ...

RBS sold the debt so they will have nothing more to do with it. You need to contact whoever now owns the debt and pay it off. The "Default" status should then change to "Settled".

As previously stated, they cannot default the same debt every month. The original default date stands and they report it every month.
  • Thanks, it was settled 18months ago from the first contact from the debt company. Rbs confirmed that the account had acquired a small amount of debt which was a mistake between them and the debt agency, that shouldn't have been there. He clarified on the phone it will be cleared and all records of that amount defaulting removed. I was cheeky and queried why the default was added after I had paid, because my credit report showed it was 2-3 month arrears at the point. After being on hold for a further 30 minutes , I can only assume there is false data on my report as I've been told everything will be cleared within 5 working days, even the default as it had been put on the month after all had been paid.
