Hope somebody can help here, usual you can!.....whilst getting going with new PC and keeping old one running for now (at least) trying to transfer over data files (lots and prefer not to go via cloud!!).
It seemed simple under XP by just mapping a drive to connect two PCs together (my memory is probably hazy but no great problems to speak of).
Connecting together win 10 and XP PCs (via ethernet network) has so far defeated me and any search I have done seems to be coming up with conflicting advice or is simply out of date!
Fed up with plugging drives via a hub/sata adaptor in and out so that permissions can be altered to allow my batch file (ok old hat too but something I have some knowledge of) to copy over the selected 'bits'. Don't really wish to physically move drives.
Is there any easy option? a guide that results in working properly? Third party software (reliable & secure) or the like?
Currently have set up a workgroup on Win 10 PC (and named same on XP and enabled file sharing that worked with other XP PCs) but win 10 machine reports that (via it's diagnostics) it sees the network and XP machine but does not get anything back from it.
Brick wall head bang stop sprang to mind..........:rotfl::(

Use the router to route with and setup network mapping to the drive you want
Or you could use the cloud0 -
can you run to the c: drive of the other machine ??
\\ipaddress\c$
You may need to turn off your firewall to test0 -
Ben, thanks. Networking via router is exactly what I would like to do but problem is how! Don't want to use the cloud really.
Andy, have been trying that ip addressing but not with the root added. Will give it a try.
As regards Firewall.....just wondering do I need to be logged on in the xp machine ......guess it only makes sense like that?.....otherwise I could not inhibit firewall.... but would root not be accessible otherwise......ramble...ramble. Need a book networking for fools ......:)0 -
c$ is the default share of the c: drive. If you dont add that the you will most likely just see an empty window
You should be able to access it even with no user logged on.
You will most likely get prompted for a username and password for the remote machine
I only mean test with the firewall off if it doesnt work straight off the bat, which it should (providing you have set your network location to home or work)0 -
Hmm, thanks. How do I set the correct network location Andy?0
-
Go into "network and sharing centre" and where it says the name of your network it should say the location underneath it .
You can click this to change it.
