  • In that case nobody pays the £35, let your Dad keep the car & you get a car elsewhere.

...and where did I say you were taking advantage of your parents?

I gave my daughter my car when I was looking for another as it was worth more to her than the the trade-in value. Did she take advantage of me....nope...she's my daughter, I'm allowed to do these type of things for her.

    Labman,
I wasn't being funny, I appreciate your thoughts, I was just merely replying to you honestly
    I haven't got one!
  • I may just have misread, or are you saying that you are getting charged £35 on top of the full premium, or just getting £35 deducted from the refund. As far as i know, it should be the second.

Raskazz is correct in what he says about main user and that insurer has to cancel. Insurers may understand your dad may not be using the vehicle anymore, but from there point of view, they are still liable for claims. Whether your dad still drives the car or not, anyone could steal the car from your OH and go for a joyroad, and just maybe be involved in a large crash costing lives. Your dads insurer would incur claim costs as they are down as the cars insurer.

And with regards to cancelling insurance when selling your vehicle, you are meant to cancel or change the vehicle on policy. Obviously this is hard to police. But in your case, the insurer is aware of the situation.

Why doesnt your OH just get a quote with the insurer you wish and just not mention your dads insurance. At the end of the day, your OH could have got the car from a total stranger. Its your dads responsibility to cancel with them, and not your OH's.
