Building warrants - is it really that pricey?

We've been thinking about doing some work in our flat - basically knocking through a plasterboard wall and a small brick wall (about 70cm wide) which is most likely supporting. I've been in touch with a structural engineer and they said the fee to do the required survey would be £450-550. I would then also need to pay someone to make up drawings of the flat. Not sure what that would cost but I'm guessing it would be several hundred pounds. Then there's the fee to apply (£100). So we might be looking at upwards of £1000 just to put in an application. Is it really that expensive to get this type of thing done or am I missing something?

Building warrants are Scotland, yes?
I'm not sure why people seem to pay so much for structural engineers. Ours would charge around £150 plus VAT for a visit and calculation. Drawings not required on a Building Notice in England but the Building Control fee would be more than £100.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

does the quote include SER certification too? tbh the price sounds fairly normal, it's just getting them out in the first place where the money is!
Where in the country are you?
I know a few dotted around the place that might be able to give you a quote for comparison.
TBH what you want to find is one that works for themselves and doesn't have any overheads, you could ask your local building standards departments if they knew any that fit the billThis is a system account and does not represent a real person.
