Hob kettle

As part of my new moneysaving campaign (the one where you spend £2000 to save a penny a week) I decided to get a hob kettle, and use gas at 1/4 the price of electricity- I reckon on saving around £15 a year at today's prices

Anyway, I found one at Wilkos for £12.95, but they only do home delivery for another £4  If it had been free delivery to store, I'd have bought one online.

But, on a trip to B&M I bought what appears to be the exact same kettle off the shelf for £4.95

Another reason is The Dog is now tall enough to jump up and grab the kettle lead, pull the kettle down and start chewing on the wire. (which she has done. Luckily she snatched the whole lead out of the socket, and then munched on the plug with only a couple of dints in the wire

So I have to unplug it and move the wire out of the way if I go out, then plug it back in again when I get home. If I forget, I might get an electrocuted dog. :( With the hob kettle, once it has cooled the worst that can happen is less than half a cup of water on the floor and a chewed plastic handle.

  • Another advantage of a hob kettle - the gas burner helps take the chill off the kitchen in the morning.
  • We use a hob kettle here. We have a big Le Creuset one and we fill it up first thing and put the left over water in a big thermos. Later in the day we put the kettle on the woodburner and continue to use the thermos through the day. It's like having a boiling water tap to hand and it feels like free hot water too

I have a small camping one which is used on the wood burner

A few years ago, we were without power for six days, we had every pan that would fit sitting on the burners so as we had hot food and water
  • Hi Facade
I use a small hob kettle as well and is small enough to boil one mug of water. Must save me money.😀

£4.95 is a bargain in Wilkies, i've looked at hob kettles and they were more expensive than an electric one.

I used a hob kettle for a while thinking I was saving money. However, have you considered the wear & tear on your cooker control? It would be a shame to chuck a whole cooker, just because you had worn out one gas tap.

(By the time this happens, you'll likely find parts unavailable.)

Façade, that's a really good price. Could you do me a favour and see if a magnet will stick to the bottom so I'd know if it would work on my induction hob please? I've been looking for one but they're all really dear.

... but is it really cheaper than using an electric kettle?
