Final payment demand, help.

Prior to switching to GB Energy supply (now bust I know) I had an excessive electricity estimate send to me by npower. This was during my switch to GB energy supplies. I explained the situation to npower, they told me I had to take it up with my new energy supplier. So I did, gave them my meter readings for them to calculate.

They explained to me that due to a large backlog it would take some weeks to resolve and advised me to get back in touch with npower and request a stop on my account, which I did. Fast forward to the 26th, I get an aggressive final demand letter from a credit company wanting me to settle the old bill?

What's the best way of dealing with this? I don't mind court, but I do mind having a default notice on my credit rating.

What can I do? Thanks.
