Paypal refund still pending

I paid £256 for an Ebay item on 19th November. A couple of hours later, i had a message from the seller saying he'd cancelled the sale and refunded me the money. I'm still waiting for the Paypal refund. I called Paypal today and the agent said she would "escalate it" and I would get an email from them. Needless to say, it's still in pending section and no email has been sent to me. I contacted the seller/refunder tonight who screen-shotted his Paypal page showing that he refunded me the money direct from his Paypal account on 19th November. I am concerned about this as the Paypal forums are littered with people having the same problem and being told there is a "glitch". This is not acceptable and I will be overdrawn in 3 days if the money is not put back in to my bank account. I don't know what to do next.

  • I had a similar issue. Apparently it happens when the person who refunds you doesn't have enough money in their account so PayPal sends you an eCheque. It took mine 7 days to clear.

Paypal do not issue e-cheques. I telephoned again today and now they tell me it is a technical issue affecting the refund transactions on 18th and 19th November. They have no idea when it will be fixed. This is simply not acceptable yet there is nothing we can do? When I see their TV advert advocating how great they are it makes me sick. There is no problem with the refunder bank account as far as Paypal are concerned they have the money from him but can not refund due the so called tech problem.

So because the seller hasn't refunded the money you'll be overdrawn? If they hadn't refunded the money but put your purchase in the post you'd still be overdrawn - just trying to understand why you are in such a panic.

Maybe OP bought from another seller spending a similar amount.

I needed to buy a certain item. Bought said item. Seller cancelled purchase of item and refunded me the money directly from his paypal balance. I assumed the refund would be imminent and went ahead and purchased a similar item - assuming the refund would be back in my account in approx 7 days time (normal time frame). The item I subsequently purchased cost me £240, which I paid for on the assumption that I would have the refund from the 1st item soon. In a couple of days time, direct debits will come out of my bank account, hence my "panic", as you put it. The money should have been back in my account over a week ago and Paypal are "working to fix the glitch" but can't tell me or the other hundreds of people in this situation, when that will be. Currently it looks as though I have Bought 2 items at £256 and then £240 - understand?

Someone outwith Paypal really ought to looking in to this. Just checked back on their forum and it's not looking good! Cant post the link here but it's Paypal community t 5 refunds and cancellation. And there is mounting discontent

Paypal e-cheques take an age unfortunately. I heard it's from when a seller has no PayPal balance and refunds.
My PayPal is broken. It absolutely will not refund if I don't have enough balance, despite it having a little note saying 'if not enough balance we will draw from account xxxxxxx'

It seems they're in a bit of a meltdown. I asked about getting an e-cheque when I rang last time and was told they don't do that (another lying agent?). Besides, the money has left the refunder's account and he still has a substantial balance in that account (per the screenshot he kindly sent me). It's gone in to a black hole along with several thousand othes' refunds, by the looks of it.
  • Unfortunately, OP, Paypal (and eBay) moved their registered offices to Luxembourg so they wouldn't come under UK financial regulator jurisdiction.

I only use Paypal as a last resort, especially for purchases over £100 where section 75 would kick in. That means I sometimes would rather pay more and not buy through Ebay unless it's a reputable seller.

Good luck in getting your money.
