Barclays Additions - Refund Success

H all,
I'd just like to say a HUGE thank you to Martin and his team for bringing this reclaim process to my attention. A month ago I had no idea I could even claim for this, but after submitting a template claim letter through Resolver, today I received a cheque from Barclays for over £3200! I'm completely stunned, as I didn't expect my claim to be successful.
This is a great early Christmas present and all down to Martin, his fantastic website, and all the wonderful people that give advice on these forums.(I also recently had two private parking tickets overturned). This website has saved me so much money!
Thanks again!

Can we ask on what grounds you complained, and why you didn't think your claim would be successful?0

I wasn't confident because they "upgraded" me to an Additions account at the end of the 1990's (I think) and my memory from all that time ago is a bit vague. I do remember looking into alternatives but I believe their free account had no overdraft facility.
At the time, I genuinely thought that free banking was a thing of the past, as I'm sure other banks also started to introduce charges. Barclays later increased the monthly charges without my permission, saying I'd been upgraded for being a loyal customer and sweetening the deal with a few extra insurance products, although I also recall them removing one or two as well during all that time.
By the time I closed the account, the monthly charges were £15. I think at some point they may have been £17.50. I'd been a customer with Barclays for nearly 30 years when I finally left them.0 -

The free account has always had an overdraft facility. I can't see how you thought free banking was a thing of the past in the late 1990's, practically every bank offered a free current account at the time.
Just goes to show how easy it is to get a pay out.0 -

I don't recall it having an overdraft, but if it did, it wasn't a great one. I certainly was given the impression that all banks were having to introduce charges. This was back in 1999, and they later moved me to the Additions Plus account , then the Additions Active. Charges changed and so did the insurance products. Remember, this was at a time when switching bank accounts wasn't so easy as it is now. I felt I had to accept the charges or would have to downgrade to an inferior current account.
That's my recollection, but it was 17 years ago!0 -
